What's everyone's thoughts on Carb intake after WLS? My doctor is more concerned w/ protein, sugar and fat than carbs. I choose wisely and have done the whole atkins thing for 2 years prior to my WLS. I still use low carb items in my diet but primarily focus on my protein, fat and sugar contents and have found by doing so, limits the amt of carbs I eat. What's your guy's thoughts? Kelli Auburn, IL

Kelli I am more conerned with sugar/fat/protien intake.. I do however watch my carbs I just dont cut them out completely because I believe we need them just dont over do them. I dont beat myself up if I have more carbs one day than I should.. Debby

Kelli, I think we get so hung up on the carb thing, we have to remember, yoyo dieting contributed to our downfall. We need a mix of protein, carbs and fat, just in moderation. Go with what your doctor says and don't stress about the rest. Terry

I think it is all about balance. we all have individual needs. If you exercise a lot you may need more carbs. I track what I eat on a regular basis. I genreally get 1500-1600 cals a day ( 3 years post op at a healthy weight and maintianing. ) I get 70 -9- gms of protien and try to stay faily low fat. my carbs are usually more than 100 grams a day. I make sure iI get the protein, I try to stick to whol egrains and fruits and veggies for my carbs. I do eat Kashi high protein cereals, whole wheat bread and whole what tortillas. I put a sample menu of a "losing" menu on my profile. I think lack of balance and total elimination of food groups sets us up for the diet mentality and failure. I am not on a diet . this is how I must eat for life. this is my life. I am working so hard to listen to my body and hear its needs. If atkins worked so great no one would have needed WLS. almost every over weight person I have ever know has tried it and ended up regaining. BTW I went to Barix as well. You should go see the dietician any time you are not sure. They will answer your questions. I highly recommend the book "how much does your soul weigh?"

that should read 70-90 grams of protein. I am a terrible typist. Isn't Dr. Vaugh cool! I saw him for my 3 year as Dr Schlessinger abandoned me and moved to Arizona!!! Dr. V was really easy to talk to and funny.

Dr Vaughn was awesome and my husband even liked him! Great personality and bedside manner. Could not have asked for a better surgeon! I also try to stay w/ whole grains and love the Kashi high protein cereals! Thanks again for all the advice! Kelli
