Upper GI...after surgery...Need Help
What can an upper GI tell after surgery? I called the surgeon's office this morning about an email I sent to them yesterday. Here is what I sent:
Good Afternoon. I just have a few questions for Dr. Fred and didn't know who could answer them. I was wondering how much should I be able to eat? Is it more than 4oz? Is it possible that my stomach could have stretched out already? I feel like I am able to eat too much and really concerned about it. I am now only down to 236. Is this normal? I am not sure why I have never been sick either. Just a few concerns. Could you please help me out.
She emailed me back and said I needed to make an appointment. I called in and was telling her what all I could eat and she said she would talk to Dr. Fred about it. She called me back and said he would like me to have an upper GI. Can this tell the size of my stomach? If it is too large, can they go back in and make it smaller? I am really worried now. Don't know if I should just leave things the way they are.

God save us all from Cecilia..
First if your not drinking enough water you will be able to hold more food so increase your water, yes the upper gi will show that but I SERIOUSLY doubt your stomach has stretched. I can eat 4-8 ounces depending on what it is... remember this is not weight ounces its volume..
I wouldnt worry you could have hit a plateau so take your measurments!!!
But then again (before anyone jumps my ^@) I am not a surgeon and you should always do what your surgeon says.
Personal note: I have never been sick either, I occasionally can eat more than 4 oz's and I wouldnt worry about it your doing great. I personally wouldnt waste my time...
Shelly email me privately if you want some more info but your doing fine you probably just hit a plateau, watch your carbs and increase your water!!!
Hey you!!! You know I would never jump your AZZ!!!! Just was really concerned and noone to talk to. I think I am going to take your advice and wait a while before making a trip all the way up there. Just was really worried about eating as much as I have. Just thought maybe he has done something wrong!! Guess not. Just the crazy people in my head!
I don't know if this is a plateau or just not doing to well at what I am suppose to be eating.

I went for 2 months didnt lose a pound.. now I was told if you stop losing measure a true plateau you do not lose pounds or inches... and your doing fine its time for that plateau.. increase your water and get out and exercise.. acceptance of a plateau will stop you from going nuts when they happen..
You know you can always always email me if you dont know or unsure

Shelley, I am a little confused why you are questioning why you have never been sick? What kind of sick? Are you talking about dumping syndrome? Only 40% of RNY patients experience it. I am one that barely dumps and my husband dumps with very little sugar or greasey food. You may not be a person that dumps. Be glad that you have not been sick.
Yes, when a doctor does an endoscope they can tell what the size of your pouch and stoma are and whether it has stretch. I am not sure what he wants to see with an upper GI. I think that you should call the office girl back and ask your questions to a clinician who has better answers.
Unless there is a major defect in your surgery I highly doubt that the doctor will go back in and make you smaller. You would most likely have to be a person that has had very little weight loss or worse yet a gain before more surgery is required. Just remember there are many different size pouches out there and every doctor has his own technique of how big or small he make his patients. If by some chance you have a slighty bigger pouch you will just have to adjust your habits of eating for the rest of your life and work with the tool that you have been given.
The other poster brought up a valid point about weighing vs volumn of food. I was instructed to measure out and only eat 1/2 cup of food for any of my meals or snacks. Which this is 4 oz. BUT not 4 oz in weight which a 1/2 cup equates to. Also remember that the denser the food the longer it stays with you. Like cheese, meats, fish. A food like cottage cheese, yogurt or salad is not going to stay in your pouch as long as a dense food like meat.
So, when you were telling your doctor's office girl what you were eating were you telling her about loose foods or dense proteins? There is a big difference.
