Pre-op, have you all had a sleep study done? I don't think I have sleep apnea and am hoping to avoid the test . if possible. It doesnt sound like fun. Thanks and regards, Ronna

I had TWO sleep studies done. The first one determined that I had sleep apnea but I did not fall into a deep enough sleep early enough in the night so I had to come back so that they could figure out the settings that I would need on my cpap. I can not lie, I tried the cpap for about a week, maybe 10 days and then I never used it again!!! I brought it with me to the hospital for my surgery and they never used it on me either!! Good luck if you have a sleep study. If you have any questions I am here for you Nancy

Thanks Nancy, I'm still hoping I don't have to have the test. I don't think I w8ll be able to fall asleep at all. It's too early for me. Heck I don't even take my last shot of insulin till 11:30 p.m. Thanks again for the quick reply, Ronna

my surgeon now requires all his patients to have a sleep study done prior to having surgery. Lucky me, I was his first patient. So, I had the sleep study done I think it was a week before my surgery. They did it all in 1 night since my surgery was so close and it was such a long drive for me back and forth. Come to find out, I did have sleep apnea, I have a machine, but I dont think I've used it but maybe a total of 6 hours total. I actually sleep WORSE with it on than I do without it. I feel very constricted with it on, and cant stand anything over my face, awake or asleep. I'm supposed to talk to my pcp when I go to see her on the 19th(She's NOT the one who ordered it.. so I dont know why my home medical service wants me to talk to her). So we will see. I just would like to give them the machine back. I'll never use it.. Best of luck to you. They're not that bad, its just hard when you know your being monitored trying to sleep, and they keep coming in to wake you for this and that. ~Lora

I thought the test was interesting and fun. You need that test to be sure you don't have sleep apnea and stop breathing during surgery. Of course they now have a Cpap machine ready to prevent that. And that is the purpose of the test. My advice is stay active that day so you are really tired that night, do your insulin take your snack and tell them you're ready. They are very accomodating. Sorry Ronna, it's something you can't avoid. Have fun with it and ask questions.

It's not fun at all! I had one 3 weeks ago. If you can, take the day after off. I was so tired after that I walked into the office and my boss said "You look like you have been partying all night." I did not sleep well at all. I had 11 electrodes on my head, 2 each on the front and back of my shoulders, 2 each on my legs. And I had a band around my waist and around my chest and a microphone taped under my chin. But, it was nice to find out I did not have sleep apnea. I woke myself up a lot snoring though because I was not sleeping on my side. I went to bed at 11:00 pm and the techs had no problem with that. I did start giggling crazily when they were setting the instruments and asking me to move my feet, smile, snore, etc. It's only one night and has to be done, good luck!
