Osteoarthritis

Well, last night at the ripe old age of 32, I was diagnosed with osteoarthritis. I saw my xrays - saw the very small space in between my 4th & 5th lumbar vertebrae and the bone spurs. I'm going for an MRI tonight. I'm very upset - I guess that all the years of being morbidly obese caught up with me (and there's a hereditary factor as well, from what I have read). The best I can hope for is to slow or stop the degeneration of my spine - it will never get better, just hopefully less painful and movement will be restored. Does anyone out there have osteoarthritis or know someone that does? The outlook seems so bleak right now. I'd appreciate any feedback.

I'm sorry to hear about your arthritis. I know how painful it can be. Mine started in my knees when I was a freshman in college (I'm now 53). At that time they gave me exercises to do to keep my joints limber. Here's the thing. The exercises hurt so I didn't do them. Big mistake. I became less and less mobile to avoid the pain and the weight piled on. I now have osteo and the beginning signs of rheumatoid arthritis. I have been on naproxen for 5 years but discontinued it a few weeks ago in preparation for my RNY this Monday. When I lose some weight I WILL exercise despite the discomfort. So although I can't give you a cheerful remedy, I will advise you to exercise and not let yourself become sedentary. You've done a terrific job so far! Best Wishes, Sherry
