Okay, I thought I was doing the right thing by ordering some sample size protein powders before I even have a date. I thought I could sample all of the flavors, see what I like and don't like so after surgery I am good to go. Someone mentioned that your tastes completely change after surgery. Is this true? Am I wasting my time and money by sampling the protein powders now? Should I just wait until I have surgery? Advice please, Thank you

HI Nancy, I would think that by trying them at least you are weding out some of the bad ones. Some of them are totally disgusting. I have surgery in 6 days and I am hoping that my tastes don't change because it took me along time to find the ones I like. I like Nectar by syntrax I mix a scoop of lemonade flavor with either a scoop of strawberry kiwi or cherry and I add more water than it says. To me they taste like koolaid. I'm not a milk drinker so I stay away from the chocolate and vanilla flavored protein. I think I just ordered mine from directsupplements.com? just search the internet and there are a million websites to compare. Take Care Lori

When I was pre-op I got all kinds of things to try after surgery. I didnt try any of them before hand because I had also heard and was told by the nutritionist that your taste will change about 98%. Well, I'm just a little over 2 weeks out and I cant tell where my taste has changed at all. I dont crave my pepsi anymore and really dont care if I have the sugar. But everyone is different so you may experience something I havent. I'd say give at least a couple of them a try just to see, it cant hurt, and that way you'll know that you can/cant tolerate some of them. Good Luck!

I did the same thing! I ordered some samples and weeded out the nasty ones. I ordered a couple of jugs to have at hand. Now that my surgery is over I have been retrying my options of shakes...and holy cow, don't know how it works, but your taste does change!!!! I used to love my morning shake, Carnation SF, FF Instant breakfast, w/tasteless Any Whey protein pwd, skim milk and ice...NOW I gag at the smell.... I guess its good to weed the nasty ones out...back to the drawing boards for me!! xoxoxojenn

I don't really think my tastes changed very much at all. My cravings for sugar and chocolate have drastically been reduced, but other than that, I still like mostly the same stuff. The Isopure Vanilla is really good, but I don't care much for their chocolate.

Nancy, I would seriously advise waiting until after your surgery, also when you do buy your protein powders be aware that you may grow weary of particular drink....and then you have a whole container of it. My mom and I got these really big containers of chocolate and vanilla flavored...big mistake...we liked it at first, like for the first two or three months, but now neither one of us can stand them and so they just sit on the shelf... Keep in mind that not everyone experiences a change in their taste buds, but better to play it safe than sorry...lol. Lisa

My favorite is EAS Advant Edge carb control ready to drink shake. 100 calories, 15 g of protein 0 sugar and 11 oz. I get mine by the case at Sam's Club, 24 paper cans (case) for somewhere around $32. You can get a four pak at Osco Drug. Osco carries chocolate fudge, French vanilla and mixed berry. A four pak is a lot less expensive than a case. I use the French vanilla to put it on my cereal then drink the rest of it later in the day.

HI NANCY ABOUT 90% OF US WHO HAVE HAD WLS-DO GO THROUGH THE TASTE CHANGING PROCESS. USUALLY THOUGH-AFTER ABOUT 9 TO 10 WEEKS, IT COMES BACK. I HAD SURGERY 2/8/05, AND COULDN'T HANDLE ANYTHING SWEET. BUT I'VE NOTICED THAT THINGS AREN'T QUITE AS BAD NOW. JUST HANG ON TO EVERYTHING AND TRY IT LATER ON OUT. GOOD LUCK!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! SUSAN
