Why is this surgery given so much attention as to how dangerous it can be? Is it that much more dangerous than any other abdominal surgery? Why??? For example, during an appendectomy, the intestines are cut and sewn shut again. Doesn't ALL invasive surgery carry certain risks?

Dawn yes every surgery is dangerous, I think the issue is that at some level this is an elective surgery... of course to those of us who need it or had it, we dont see it as elective we see it as life saving. I knew the risks going in and I knew that I wasnt living as I was... I chose to face those risks and do everything my surgeon said to do so I would have a good outcome...

Dawn, When youre MO, any surgery is more dangerous than the 'average' sized person. For some reason, esp. with abdominal surgery, we run a higher risk of DVT. Definitely not something to enter into lightly However, IMHO, the outcome is worth the risks;)

My surgeon compared the surgery's severity to that of a heart bypass. You are severely and irreversibly altering your digestive track. It is a huge deal - certainly much more complicated than a gallbladder or appendix removal.
