Hi, I had surgery on Wednesday at De Paul and went home Friday. I'm feeling so much better ! I'm kind of concerned because I have only lost 3 lbs since Wednesday. Is that normal? I'm so afraid this isnt going to work for me after all this. I can drink a cup of liquids with no problem, and thought that was a larger amount than we should be able to hold. Any idea of what you lost 4 or 5 days out ? I know I should be patient but.... Thanks!

You body is probably just retaining water. They did put an awful lot of fluids through you during and after surgery. Try weighing yourself in one week. ((((HUGS)))) Dawn

Hi Lisa Marie Welcome home! I wouldn't worry about the scale right now. Your body is going to be undergoing some serious readjusting for a while now. It will work, just focus on getting in your fluids and walking as much as you're able to right now. As for being able to drink a cup of liquids - you didn't say how long it took you to do that. Liquids will drain right through your pouch. Also, a lot of cutting/rearranging went on, pain receptors, nerves and all those things that tell our brains we're full are still healing and will be for a while so at times you may not be able to feel full even if you really are. Stick to the guidelines they gave you and you'll be just fine Now, go toss that scale out the window and go enjoy this beautiful sunshiny day! Hugz Cathy

Lisa, they pump huge amounts of fluids into you during surgery and when you are back in your room until they take the IV out of your arm. I know that for a fact that my surgeon pumps 300cc of fluid per hour into his patients during surgery. I gained 30# while in the hospital. It all came off and an additional 18# before I went for my first PO apt to have the staples out. Fluids will drain right out of you now that you are PO, but make sure that you do not chug your fluids until you get the go ahead from your doctor. It is important for your healing inside to not expand your pouch and your stomas. You are interely normal with your weight loss right now. Do not compare yourself with others with how you are doing. AND STAY OFF OF THE SCALE, THROW IT AWAY!!!!

Lisa, another thing your body is retaining the fluids right now in defense of the attack that it feels that it received with having the surgery. It is safe guarding what you have in you by retaining the fluids. And also when a person cuts back on its fluid intake the body's natural response is to retain fluids and a lot of it will go to the bowels and be utilized there with the production of your body making waste. Your body needs fluids for all of its processes and it will retain it in its tissues when it feels that there is a reduction in what it is given. It will retain the fluids for the bodys use later on. This happens also with a reduction in calories. You may have a slow down in your weight loss at times because the body will constantly be adjusting to how the body will handle the lesser amounts of calories it is given. It is a wonderful thing that God has created with the body, just a wonderful machine.
