Well, I don't know what to tell you. I'd have to know your statistics and comorbidites, etc. My doctor told me he won't approve anyone with a BMI around 40. He only handles more severe cases. Do you have any weight related problems?

Julie, you should not have a problem with your BMI, I had just about the same BMI as you and was given the green light by my doctor at WISH. I do not mean to wish bad things on you but if you have any co-morbids that will help also. I had high BP and type II diabetes. I also had things that were agravated by the weight like sore joints and heel spurs, OUCH! Good luck girl and keep us posted later on in the day. Chris

Yea, I have been diabetic, on oral meds for over 10 years, just recently started insulin shots~OUCH!! Already sick of them.....Sore joints, back aches, knees hurt,Overall body aches, from the excess weight, I am sure..........So, maybe a not so good thing could help me.....Be approved that is......Lets keep our fingers crossed!!! Julie, when I went for my consult I was 106 pounds overweight, with glucose intolerance (not actual diabetes, but taking glucophage) plus neuropathy. As a result, Dr. Vaughn gave me the green light. You have to remember, they WANT you to be a candidate. It's just your insurance company that you need to worry about. Terry

Julie, from talking with my surgeon I get the impression that most Dr's are VERY much more likely to approve people that have educated themselves - as you have, and know all the risks etc... You walk in there with your head high. Have your list of questions/concerns. Be smart. And I'll say a prayer for you!!! Katie

The main concern of doctors is are you right for the surgery. You are the one who does the real work post op. Ask yourself if you are ready to eat 1/2 cup servings of certain foods 3 times a day in the beggining. Are you willing to make a lifestyle change like no other, including exercising every day. And are you ready to do this for the rest of YOUR life? Those are the things the doctor needs to know in making his decision. If you can't then you are not right for the surgery. All it requires is 100 pounds overweight. Co morditiy factors like type two diabetes, hypertension, osteoarthritis and others. Every Doctor has their criteria for meeting the requirements of WLS. Trust me you must be ready to do this, its not an easy decision and it is permanent. I for one am still awaiting approval for the surgery, and I am so tired of this health state, I'd eat rocks if I had to to be accepted by my doctor, which I was. Good luck, be honest with the surgeon, and ask him questions about his sucess and complication rates, that's important. Remember you are chosing the surgeon, he is not necessarily choosing you.

Dr. Boe is great, he was on call one night when I was in the hospital. He seemed really caring!
