No Surgery For Me

Found out after asking the insurance company 78574987435473 times to make sure this was NOT the case, that my policy will cover RNY but not Lap Band. My coverage switches to BCBS on 3/1, and of course they require the 1 yr supervised diet. There isn't enough time for me to appeal Unicare's decision and have surgery by the end of the month. So....I just wanted to wish everyone else the best, and thanks for answering my questions. Amy

Amy, I'm sorry to hear about this. Don't give up though. Everything happens for a reason and go for it under the new insurance. No matter what they require it is worth it. Giovanna 250/205/130

I'm scared to death of having RNY done, yes. I also made a promise to my S/O that I wouldn't have that done if I couldn't get lap band. I am going to give diet and exercise one more try, and then work on the new insurance company with everything I have. I agree, that everything happens for a reason. I was going to get upset about it, but I decided it wasn't worth it. Thanks for the support

Hi Amy I'm so sorry to hear your news. I hope that you will continue to come here for support. I am a firm believer that everything happens for a reason - whether we ever find out what that is or not. Please don't give up if this is what you want. I wish you all the best! Hugz, Cathy

Amy, For what it's worth, I knew my insurance was changing and made sure my surgeon knew about it.. they worked hard to get me in before it changed and did it. Talk to your scheduler and insurance specialist at the doctor's office.. who says they can't get you in until you try? Stef Lap RNY 11/12/04 390 -> 332 -> 175

If you are even thinking about getting insurance coverage and you're going to go the diet and exercise route anyway, you should combine them. Meaning - meet monthly with your doctor and have him/her record that you are working on diet and exercise. I mean, if you're going to go the diet/exercise route anyway, might as well not lose any time on the 1 year requirement! Good luck! Illini Lady -- still slogging away at her 12 months!

I'm going to do just that. I just signed up at the local gym, and I have to find a new PCP when I change insurance next month. Anyone know a good one around the Arlington Heights area that takes BCBS HMO? I have to pick one by tomorrow. I'm just upset that I wasted time off of work and my own money, when my insurance company knew they didn't even cover lap band, only RNY. I honestly don't think most of the customer service people know the difference, to be honest. They were all so sweet and helpful, even going out of their way pull my fax and to start my case on the phone with me. I'm sure I'll be around reading on the rest of everyone's progress for inspiration. Thanks for all your wonderful posts.
