Just wondered if anyone went and got life insurance before their surgery? I was just denied insurance because I told them I was having the surgery. I can't get it till 6 months after the surgery and then my premiums are going to be $50.00 a month for three years. They rate WLS customers higher because of the risk of complications. If anyone got insurance who did you get it with? Thanks, Konni

There are MANY insurance companies who won't even cover you after a WLS surgery - they class you as uninsurable, and you can't even pay a rated premium. I upped my whole life pre-surgery and said 'OK' to the rated premium for being overweight (I knew it would happen) - just to make sure I was covered. I would suggest calling an agent and trying to get a new policy - 'don't ask, don't tell' - if you have health problems, you can't lie about that, but they probably won't ask if you're planning on having WLS surgery!!!! Call the major ones - State Farm, AllState - you'll probably get the best rates with them.

State Farm is the one we just went to. I had no idea I wasn't suppose to say anything about the surgery. Well I didn't say it hubby did. Then all hell broke loss. I can't blame him (the agent) for looking into it as much as he did but my god ALL the questions and then the comments about the surgery. I guess I'm just sensitive! He meant well though, he said he didn't want to write the policy up and then have something happen to me and them say "well we will give you back your premiums but not your death benefits, she had surgery we don't cover"...he said something about a 2 year clause...if something happens to me within two years of the policy like I have the surgery....knew I was going to have it within two years and something happens?...they DON'T have to pay. I don't have any policy at all...this would have been a new policy. I guess I just have to hope nothing happens to me. I'm just a lil ticked off too that they charge people more for being over weight yet they won't cover you at all if you are going to try and correct that but again...I think I'm just being sensitive to it all right now! Thanks for your response Katie ~hugs~ Konni

I HAVE HAD WEST COST LIFE FOR 3 YEARS WITH MY HUSBAND. WE PAY 42 A MONTH FOR 250,000 IT WAS HIGH BECAUSE BECAUSE OF MY WEIGHT. i WOULD MAYBE NOT TELL THEM YOU ARE GETTING THE SURGERY (JUST A LITTLE WHITE LIE) I ALSO HAVE GLOBE LIFE FOR MY 2 KIDS THEY ARE CHEAP AND EVEN MY MOM WHO IS 54 IT WAS A GOOD PRICE TOO. JUST CHECK A COUPLE OUT AND SEE WHAT THEIR PRICE IS. ALSO TRY DIRECTQUOTES.COM OR ONE OF THEM.

I tried before surgery without telling them I was having it and was denied anyway because of my weight. My BMI was off thier charts and thought I had made an error entering my weight. When I said it was corect, they informed me I was uninsurable. I wonder if I can get insured now? I am 18 months out and starting to think about PS.

According to State Farm you could now (6 months after surgery he said) but your rating might be between 3-6 (which makes your premiums higher then standard)...from what I've learned now DON'T tell about the PS

Most places that have to underwrite you individually are going to consider you uninsurable at your pre-surgery weight. And many will exclude you after surgery. It is a sucky system. The best bet for anyone with an employer-sponsored life insurance plan would be to get the maximum insurance through the plan. You do NOT have to prove insurability when you enroll. If you opt for less than the maximum and want to increase, you will have to prove insurability. Be cautious.

Cheryl, This sound like the SOB insurance companys are just screwing us larger than life people over one more way. I am really shocked by what you have posted here. You would think that they should want to insure someone that has just lost a lot of weight and that is exerising daily. What in the He(( is this world coming to? By the way Thank you for this little bit of information, I had no idea. By the way how much weight have you lost. I don't think I would ever had guessed that you have ever had this surgery if I had not read it here. Thanks

Mr C - You're very sweet. That's the most wonderful compliment ever. I've lost 120 pounds since my surgery on 7/31/2003. And you're right that insurance companies suck. I remember when I was in high school and my mother wanted to take out a life insurance policy on me. The agent asked a ton of medical questions - one of them was whether I'd gained/lost a more than 25 pounds in the past 5 years. Having battled eating disorders, the answer was obviously yes. But apparently even a more "moderate" weight loss without surgery is some kind of "red flag" for those insurance people.
