Can Skin Be Donated?
Dee, no the donation of skin is an urband legend. The skin of an obese patient has been stretched past its point of elasticity. You see the doctor needs to put the donated skin thru a small instrument that stretches it again and he/she needs to use healthy skin and skin that has not been stretched through obesity. Think of it as a rubber band or elastic that has been stretched stretched stretched and has been kept stretched for a long time, it does not spring back anymore, that is what an obese person's skin is like. This is how the doctor at my plastic surgery seminar explained the above. I also had a plastic surgeon at my speak at one of my support groups and they both explained it the same way. This question has been addressed many times over on the Q & A board if you want to do a search on it. Be careful as to what is said in chat, I take it all with a grain of salt, they are not professionals and I shake my head at how questions are answered in there, some of the information is so erroneous.
So, hope this helps you, just ask if you have more questions. ChrisB(f) Itasca IL, this is the name I use in chat, maybe I will "see" you in there some day. Christine
ps I undersatand that they use cadaver skin for burn victims.
