Protein ?
I'm more worried about right after surgery when we really cant eat all that much. Once I'm able to puree, I'll most definately try to get at least 1/2 of my protien through regular food.
But I'm not sure about the vitamin part.
I know a lady who had NEVER had to have a protein shake or anything like that. She said her dr never recommended it.
It would scare me, you would think that she would even on her own want to get it in, just to be careful, ya know.
My doc doesnt want his patients to drink them because they have too many calories. Thats good because I havent found a protein powder that didnt make me gag.
He wants us to get all we need from the food we eat, which in turn, we eat the right foods.
I sometimes have a hard time getting in all Im supposed to, but some days I make up for it.
Good luck!
I personally drink a protein drink from time to time for different reasons. It might be because I'm tight from a fill and am hungry but can't swallow much. The other main reason was, after surgery, my hair fell out a lot and I couldn't eat the protein I needed. That is no longer a problem. Hope this helps. Beth
The Obesity Help magazine had an article on this in the last issue. I can't remember the details but the doctor was comparing the usable protein in various forms. Bottom line is that whey based protein is the best. I think egg protein, casein protein and meat protein weren't far behind. If you are a recent post-op it is easiest to get your protein from a whey based protein shake. As you begin to require more food, it is best to switch to solid protein. It keeps you full for longer. One thing to balance though is to make sure you get some solid protein in the early stages too so that you don't develop and aversion to solid protein. Hope this helps.
