Hey Guys... I know I've been scarce here but I need some help. My mom is having surgery in 3 weeks and she asked me if there is anything bad that I'm keeping from her about surgery. You know that head thing we all went through pre-op. Anyway, I told her that the What Sucks/What Rocks list would be overtaken by the What Rocks list. So I'm asking you all.... What is the worst part of post-op life for you? I couldn't think of anything. LOL She is going to have open RNY with hernia removal. When you post, please post your op date and your stats. Thanks guys! Melissa Lap RNY 8/31/04 398/3?? Maybe 2??/190

Happy New Year!!!! Ok, I'm not any-op, but based on my DH's experience with the open RNY, the worst part is waiting for the incision to heal completely. Depending on the surgeon, she may or may not have staples (my DH did not) but the open is tough because of the muscles that are cut through. In addition, right now, he is going through some food issues, with trying to find things he can/can't eat. Otherwise, he is done at least 66# so far, and continues to lose (I can DEFINITELY see a difference). Best wishes to your mom, and I'm sure "real" post-ops will have some words of wisdom for you to share with her. Jennifer

Dang.. It's hard to think of things that aren't great. I guess if I was pressed to say what sucks.. there would only be two things that I'm dealing with right now.. I'm really picky about foods now -- sometimes it's hard to decide what I want to eat so I'll end up having a shake or not eating at all (bad Stef!).. The other thing that sort of sucks is when I'm home alone and bored, I have to find something else to do other than eat! Not because I can't (because if I wanted to eat a little something, I'm sure I could).. because I just don't WANT to! Aside from those things (and seriously, I had to really THINK about it).. it's way better over here. I can move around better.. I don't get winded going up my stairs to my apt.. I LOVE to walk now! I went into a bathroom stall at work yesterday and thought they had re-sized them because I didn't feel so claustrophobic in there!! The "What Rocks" list DEFINITELY overshadows the "What Sucks" list. Stef Lap RNY 11/12/04 390/347(??)/175 PS Biscuit.. I bought a scale yesterday -- pretty darn accurate and goes up to 330# (so I can't use it yet) but you're welcome to come over and weigh yourself!!

Hi Melissa! I also had an open with hernia fix and gallbladder removal. The worst 'pain' part was the gas pains up under my ribs in the hospital. I was never more happy to FART in my life than to get that relief finally. In all honesty, the pain I could handle, and it never got so that I couldn't stand it. The worst part for me was the depression post-op after several weeks, and then also several weeks that I had chronic nausea that I could NOT get rid of - which also made the depression worse. Although my dietician didn't agree too much, part of the way I got through some of my head hunger things before I was able to eat solids, was to chew something up and spit it out. It helped so much and gave me my sanity back!!!! I wouldn't change a thing. I'm so glad I finally got this far!

Hey Melissa The worst part of post op life is probably the first few months IMHO ... I mean, getting used to what works for you, what makes you sick and what doesn't and then trying it all over again to see if it still makes you sick. Not well written, sorry. Trying to come up with things off the top of my head. All the rest has just been grand to be honest. Good luck to mom! Cathy Open RNY 6/7/04 300/198/140

Hey Melissa, This is tough one because I have healed so well and am eating well. I would have to say getting my liquids in is toughest and the head hunger. Esp. when im stressed. I personallly had problems with a lot of pain control at first but that could have just been me. The up sides, i have more energy, the inchs are dropping (more than the lbs lol) and clothes are feeling better. My daugheter couldnt even keep up with me at the mall last week! Good luck to your mom Giovanna 246/220/130
