Hi Rebekah,
Tell your dad he has nothing to worry about. I've been out to eat with my wife several times since my surgery, and she has never looked, or felt, like a pig. Anybody who eats a normal-size portion of anything will look just fine to anybody else. The one who looks "different" is the one not eating as much, and I generally feel I look merely like someone who wasn't all that hungry. (Not exactly a "look" I had much experience in prior to surgery either!) Tell your dad to chill and enjoy the meal.
Bekah,
I know this is late...but, on Christmas Eve we went out to dinner, our first since the surgery as a family. It was my son's birthday, and we always go to a movie (Ocean's Twelve is awesome!) and dinner. We went to Buffalo Wild Wings (I think that's what its called???) at my son's request.
We ordered 24 wings. My husband ate 2-1/2, and my son and I split the rest. My 8 year old daughter ate a 1/2 pound of popcorn shrimp. The three of us also had dessert.
MY husband kept worrying that the waitress would think HE was the weird one, because he's a fat guy who only ate 2-1/2 wings, with no beverage and no dessert, while the rest of us ate normally. Personally, I don't care what the waitress thinks, I don't know her from Adam. Let her go home and tell her family about the fat guy who only ate a tiny portion. Whatever! It is interesting that we put so much stock into what others think, when the reality is that we aren't that important to those we are most concerned will think us odd. Do you really think the waitress or waiter in any eatery pays attention to the consumption of a particular customer??? That would speak more to the character of the wait staff than to the customer, I would think.
It's time we all value the intrinsic worth we have as individuals, and stop regarding the opinion of others as critical to our sanity.
On that note, my concern has been whether or not it is psychologically challenging for my husband to watch us eat our large portions, and whether or not HE feels deprived. He assures me that he doesn't, he is really not hungry most of the time. I sorta believe him...maybe.
Anyway, I hope everyone had a wonderful Christmas!
Happy New Year!
