Post-Op Question
I have a question for all you post-ops out there. How long after surgery were you able to return to some normal activities? Things like climbing stairs, sitting at a desk, making phonecalls and driving? I am having a Lap RNY on January 6 and wonder how long before I can resume working at home.
Lauren
Well, as far as sitting at a desk, climbing stairs, and making phone calls, I could do all of that right away, anything that had to do with moving was very slow, but I managed. I slept in the recliner for weeks because I was afraid to roll over, and because I was a little sore.
And driving I did about a week later to go get my drains out, the only reason they said not to drive was because of the pain medication, which I didnt need at all post surgery. I wasnt too comfortable driving because I was worried about sudden stops and twisting, etc.
Everyones experience is different though, but you should do just fine!
Good luck!!
Lauren;
I was able to do all those things after my lap rny but did them very slowly. I have lots of stairs in my home and I did manage. I just made my trips count. You will probably have a lifting restriction for a while. I couldn't drive for the first week. I needed help with laundry due to the stooping over and making my staples very irritating. I had great help at home from my husband and kids. They all really pitched in and helped. After the staples and drain were out I felt 100% better. The second and third week was better but after I finally got on pureed food I have felt 110% better. This may all be in my head but what the heck, it's working. Have a Great Christmas and Happy New Year. You'll do great. Just keep a positive attitude and do as your surgeon tells you and you'll succeed at your weight loss.

Lauren,
I was able to get around pretty quickly.. for about 2wks post op, my energy level was pretty low.. but that changed quickly. From the day I got home, I was able to work at my desk and make phone calls -- though my speaking volume was a little low.. I didn't drive until the Dr. released me at 10 days.. And I didn't really try tackling the stairs until I could drive (I live in a 3 story walkup).
The good thing is, though.. once you have one breakthrough, the rest come like gangbusters.
Do take your time recuperating, though.. I felt like I was ready to go back to work after 2wks.. but I'm so glad I took the 3rd week. When I did go back, I was pretty exhausted, even though my energy level was way up.
Be gentle with yourself..
