I had to have a blood gas test pre-op. In most cases I've ever heard of, it's actually non-invasive and completely painless but they may send you home with a monitor overnight and you have to sleep with the clip on your finger.
All it's doing is telling them how much oxygen saturation is in your bloodstream (meaning how much oxygen you absorb when you breathe).
In the hospital, I also had to have the machine attached for a while and alarms would go off when I wasn't getting enough 02 saturation.. or if I leaned on my arm.. or if I turned to the left.. it got pretty funny... the alarm would go off and I'd be shouting out the door "IT'S OKAY, I JUST ROLLED OVER!" so the nurses wouldn't come running..
The machine they use is a pulse oximeter and it's just a little clip that goes onto your fingertip. Nothing to worry about, I'm sure.
