I was told i would have to have one but to my knowledge they didnt do it and im sure i would remember that. Then again I was also told i would be on pepcid and im not so it may just be the drs. individualize it. If they do it right it wont be to bad and nothing compared to after surgery pain consider it a warm-up speaking of warm-up, wheres Jason been the last day or so...did we scare him off? okay now that ive tottally gone off topic id better get my but ready for my 1 wk check up at noon...here's to hoping giovanna

You'll have plenty of gas post op. There is no reason for them to check it now! I've never heard of me needing a blood gas but it could be in that big list of letters when they check my blood. Is it something special?

Not for my surgery, but I had to have one in the ER a few years back while on vacation ... can we say OUCH?!! Hopefully you won't have to go through that!

I didn't have to have a blood gas done. I had to have pulmonary function testing done though. That doesn't hurt a bit. Every dr is different from the type of preop testing to post op eating....or lack of. Take care all and have a great day! Andrea lap rny 12/1/04 -24#

I had to have a blood gas test pre-op. In most cases I've ever heard of, it's actually non-invasive and completely painless but they may send you home with a monitor overnight and you have to sleep with the clip on your finger. All it's doing is telling them how much oxygen saturation is in your bloodstream (meaning how much oxygen you absorb when you breathe). In the hospital, I also had to have the machine attached for a while and alarms would go off when I wasn't getting enough 02 saturation.. or if I leaned on my arm.. or if I turned to the left.. it got pretty funny... the alarm would go off and I'd be shouting out the door "IT'S OKAY, I JUST ROLLED OVER!" so the nurses wouldn't come running.. The machine they use is a pulse oximeter and it's just a little clip that goes onto your fingertip. Nothing to worry about, I'm sure. Stef
