Hello all, I am 1 year (11/24/03 surgery date) and was wondering how many oz. our pouch is at this time. I went for my 1year follow up with surgeon last night, and was very discouraged. I fell off track approx. 4-5 months ago, went into depression, and just didnt care what I ate or drank. I started at 435 and am down to 308. I have only lost 43% of the excess weight, and surgeon says normally we are supposed to lose 70-80% by 18-24 months. I dont see that happening for me right now. I am back on track now, taking wellbutrin, back to working out, protein shakes and trying to watch what I am eating, and lots of water, water, water! ! ! ! Any helpful hints anyone?????????? Cara

Hi Cara! I didn't want you to think that we're ignoring you. I'm still a 'newbie' and can't answer your question... but I did want you to know that I'll be thinking of you, and I'm VERY HAPPY that you're back and taking control! That's fantastic!

Cara, your doctor's office offers nutritionist help out of Alexian Brothers. I know this for a fact because my husband had his surgery (RNY) with Rantis. Their telephone number is on your packet of information that you received when you got your information on your PO diet. I even believe that it is a 24 hr #. That is what you paid the surgeon for, to get that help on your PO diet it is part of the fee. But, other than that you can do it, you just have to put your nose to the grindstone and knuckle down and do it. I have had ups and downs with falling off of track in the last 18 months since my surgery. I got lazy and ate a lot of junk for a while and did not loose much weight, even went up about 5-7#. I stopped loosing for about 6 months. I finally just recently said to myself I need to gain control again and make sure I get all my meals and snacks in and to only eat the 1/2 cup portion that I am supposed to. And you know what? I started loosing weight again. I was a lightweight to begin with, needing to loose 111# total. I only need to loose another 20#. I would like to loose most of that by the time I have my PS on Jan 28th. I think that I can take off some of it. One of the important things that you need to remember is to eat slowly, I try to take at least 15-20 minutes to eat my meals. When I do this I really have a good handle on when I feel full. Your doctor's group usually makes their patient's pouches the size of a golf ball. From what my husband was told it would hold 4 oz and would eventually stretch to 6 oz. My husband is 1 year out (Sept 30th) and he can just about get 1/2 cup in when he really concentrates on his fullness. So try to start doing some of the things that I suggested and see what happens. You can get this back under control, you have the tool to use. If you want any further help just email me through this site.

Cara, I also had my surgery with SSCS with Dr. Rantis, his nurse Karyn Skleney has alway been very helpful with a eating plan. Give her a call and see if you can see her since Sr. retired I don't know who's doing the follow-up care for him. I've heard alot about Jr. & Sr. not giving great after care. But Dr. Rantis and Karyn spend all the time with you that you need and will do anything to help you stay on track. In your dreams

alexian brothers messed my friend at work up! she was 300 post op and went in for her surgery well the real surgeon couldn't make it so while she was sedated his son showed up and he performed the surgery and he cut too much of her intestine and she went into septic shock!was in a coma for a while she said it took her 2yrs to fully recover she is now 140 pounds and she said she went through hell but if the mishap didn't happen she would have done it again her diabetes and asthma and arthritis is gone and she never felt better but her road to success wasn't easy she said what she eats now is all psychological and she has learned to adapt to her nwe way of life, especially with all she went through to get there!!!!!
