I am 2 1/2 months out and just had my first dumping attack last night. The problem is I don't have a clue why this happened (no sugar or fat) and hope you can help, as I don't EVER, EVER, EVER want to go through that again. The only thing I can come up with is I took my first dose of zinc supplement on an empty stomach. Here is what I ate for the day and have done so a zillion times and never dumped. 1 cup of milk protein drink 1.5 oz of shrimp 1 - babybel cheese 1.5 oz of broiled chicken, 1 spoonful green beans, 1 spoon full of mash tatters (I have eaten this several times and never got sick) After about 2 hours I went upstairs to go to bed and took my biotin (taken several times) and my zinc (for the first time) After about 20 mins I felt like someone had kicked me in the stomach. I felt like if I went to the bathroom I would feel better but then the dry heaves set in and I thought I was going to throw up my new tummy. I tried to drink water so there would be no dry heaves but then I felt hot and heaved again, just as it started to seattle down then I was really cold and it started again. This went on for several hours. At some point I curled up in a ball and must have fell asleep. This morning I feel ok with the exception of feeling like someone kicked me in the stomach. Again, I don't want to ever go through that again, but in order to make sure I have to find out what caused it. Sorry for the long story but wanted to give you details. Do you think taking the zinc on an empty tummy would cause dumping? The bottle says to take with a meal. Now I read it, what a dummy. Any advice and help is GREATLY appreciated as now I am fearful of eating and tomorrow is my first day back to work after being gone for 2 1/2 months.

It could have been the chicken. I know that at 2 months post-op, I tried chicken, and I did well with it about 3-4 times, and then all of a sudden, one day I dumped from it. I now know, that I can't eat white meat...it is just too dry, I have to stick to dark meat, and really moist. I don't know about the zinc because I don't take that, but I just wanted to give you my thoughts. Good luck! Tricia

Zinc is VERY hard on the stomach and should always be taken with food. What you experienced probably isn't dumping though. It's more like nausea from the zinc.

Hi Kathy: There are many times that there is something I have eaten before will cause me to dump on occasion..I have no idea why or if it is just a grumpy pouch that day. I am 16 months out and sometimes when I eat chicken I do dump, mine is normally not the vomiting but from the south end LOL. I could be there was more fat in that piece of chicken it didn't get cooked right ETC..ETC...And as others mentioned it could have been the zinc...This is a live and learn process everyone dumps on different things and I all know we want to avoid that little side effect... Take care and keep experimenting and maybe you might find the answer. Ramona
