Newbie with Pre-/Post questions and support group query
Hi Everyone!
I am scheduled the end of this month for WLS and besides being nervous I feel unprepared. The only advice I've received from my surgeons office is a big packet of info, but nothing 'taylored' to me personally (even tho I've asked). I am catching a cold which doesn't help either (sorry for my grumpiness!).
So my questions are the following:
1) Any support groups near Aurora/Naperville area for next week?
2) Does anyone know of any 'non-flavored' protien powders that don't have a really distinctive flavor? I haven't found any at local shops and I've been warned about Soy products. I want something that I can add to vegetarian meals or 'non-sweet' items.
3) Has anyone had stitches rather than staples? Is staples the norm? I would prefer to have less scarring myself so that's why I'm asking. (I'm scheduled for lap).
4) What Pre-Op preparedness did you do for Pre and Post surgery?
5) Which vitamin supplement has been the easiest to handle? I am really sensitive to Iron (ever since a kid) but I'm told I need it after surgery. (When my body needed Iron I would get a craving for beef- then I would eat beef). Any suggestions?
6) Question for Women who've had LAP- were you able to wear a bra/underwire bra, jeans, other thicker/constrictive clothing afterwards? If not, how long until you could?
Thanks for any help you have and sorry if these questions are posted elsewhere!

I don't really know of any that are close, but I live in Lisle, and on the 16th, my husband is having surgery in Chicago, too.
I use the boards (Illinois ONLY, not the main board) for my support, even though I'm not the one having surgery, everyone has been incredibly thoughtful and kind.
I can't help you with your post op questions, and I've never tasted a protein drink, although my DH has been using the ON Whey Protein to make his shakes (as prep for having to drink them after surgery).
I know that you will get great answers from the rest of the group, but its nice to see someone on who lives closer to me...
Good luck, and welcome!

Ok..here goes..1)never been to a support group..cant help ya there 2) i dont use protein powder..i get my nutrition from food..but immediately post op I used Unjury protein powder that you can even stir into warm soup..no flavor, no aftertaste Its about as good as it gets, which is still very sucky 3) If youre having lap, you'll probably get glued and steri-stripped..no stitches and VERY VERY little teeny scars 5) Hm..has your doctor not mentioned Flintsones? Many docs have you chew flintstones immed. post op because they're gentle...I just take Womens one a day plus iron now..and a b12 sublingual. You will definitely learn to be more in touch with your body's cravings post op...and learn to listen to them They'll tell you what you need. I craved o.j. post op...must have needed vit. c or something. Your body's pretty smart, if you just learn its signals
As far as clothes post op..I left the hosp in my loose nightie. Remember, many people gain wt in the hosp due to the iv fluid buildup. You'll pee it out..so don't freak, but the clothes you wear in might be snug when leaving. I suggest a nightie and slip on shoes No one will even notice you walking out in your jammies My highest lap incision scar is about 2" below my breastbone...but you're pretty sore (ie like you got run over by a mac truck:P ) for a couple days. I cant imagine an underwire would cheer you up!!
Best wishes ! Youre going to be so happy you did this! Keep us posted!
