Atkins Advantage Shakes

Okay.. saw these at walmart last night and was STUNNED when I saw an 11oz can had 20gms of protein and like 1gm sugars/carbs.. or something like that. Has anyone tried these post-op?

Hi Stephanie, I did try the atkins shakes that were pre made in the silver package. I did not like them at all. They were very watery and reminded me of liquid toothpaste. Strange description I know- but that what they reminded me of. There was a large can of powder at walmart but I do not remember the name. It was very high in protein- low in carbs and about 1/3 of the price!!!!!! I mixed it with milk instead of water and it made it creamier. It did not mix up that well though. I do wonder, if you did not not mix with milk, that mixing with a luke warm water wouldn't be better. It just seems like there were many little lumps. I will look at walmart next time I go to see the name. I think it was a white can at cost around 8-9$. Take care, Julie P.S. Just F.Y.I. I wish someone would have told me that cold liquids after surgery hurts your belly. Just wanted to pass that on.

Hi Stef, I think I have tried those, the vanilla poured over ice isn't to bad, if they are the ones i'm thinking of, 4 pack , silver, look kinda like a box? Otherwise, I was looking at some slim-fast, the low carb stuff, and it has 20 g protein if i remember correctly. I don't know what else is in it, but they arn't to bad either. Bought them during yet another failed diet plan. Go figure. Oh well good luck, I should start making a list of all the good things to eat that ya all talk about on here, for when i have my surgury someday.... (trying to stay positive, and maybe someday will be here with in the next 6 months i hope)

Stefanie: The Atkins silver boxes and the cans taste horrible in my opinion. I saw all these at Wal-Mart too and they were clearanced at an unbelievable price! The reason they are discontinuing them from their shelves either because they did not sell well, or they are adding a different line which the first one is probably more true. I used to work for Wal-Mart and if something didn't move it got deleted. I lovede the Dr. Phil shakes and found some while back at the Dollar Deals store, but they also were being discontinued hence that is why they were at the Dollar stores! Go FIgure. Ramona

Stef call around to some of the vitamin health places like GNC sometimes they have huge containers of powdered protien drink at good prices, and if you want to avoid little clumps when mixing use a blender and blend the hell out of it... add some ice to make a milk shake too.... Be sure to tell the vitamin guy that you are a baratric patient and can't have sugar!! I'm going on friday after work to check out getting some. I'll let you know what I find out... I actually found a virtually flavorless protein powder mix at Whole Foods. The cool thing about it is I can buy as much or as little as I want, since it's in the bulk foods bins -- and I'm also not paying for the pretty can and all the printed labels. It's got something like 20g protein for a 1/4c. serving. It's made from soy and you know the soy is good for the womens. One of my voice teachers back in San Diego started me on soy protein smoothies as a way to increase energy without creating a lot of phlegm -- we used soy or almond milk, frozen mango and banana pieces, soy protein powder and sometimes some kiwi or strawberries.. oh those were so yummy.. Oh and I know about the shakes deal.. on my diet history, you'd see opti-fast so I'm familiar with making powdered food be good and even pallateable. I'm so excited you might come visit me!!! You'll get to meet the monkey, too!!! and my cute brother!! LOL it'll be lots of fun, I can tell already!! They'll send me home just because I'm having so much fun and fun is not allowed in the hospital! Stef

OMG!! IF YOU ONLY KNEW HOW INCREDIBLY FUNNY THAT IS!!! No.. "monkey" refers to my boyfriend, Mike. He'll be there all weekend. *giggles* We have an ongoing joke about this sound my cat makes when he starts having sex with his sweater (my cat is a sweater-sexual).. My brother will be there, too.. and he'll have his dog with him. Mardigan is a seizure alert dog so where Darren goes, Mardigan goes. maybe the cat would be best at home..
