My mother was of Eastern European decent and my Dad was Puerto Rican. My Brother is the spitting image of Mother and I of my Dad. It hurt so much whenever I was with my Mom and people would ask her if she was my babysitter. Of course she would always tell people I was her beautiful little girl...
At times I find it somewhat difficult being bi-racial. Do not get me wrong, I would never trade having the best of both worlds, but mean, hateful people suck!
I find that Hispanics tend to be more welcoming; whereas some Caucasians do not warm up to me until they know I am 'half' (down side). Most people have a difficult time guessing my nationality, (people usually think I am Greek, Sicilian, Indian, Austrian, Hispanic, Assyrian etc...) it is so much fun stumping people (up side). Other pluses would definitely be that I have a natural tan (I don't have to go to a tanning salon) and I am at times described as exotic. ;)
Thanks for being a caring person, you rock!

We get stared at all the time when we go out in a group..MY mother is the typical little Italian lady, my sisters have blond hair and BLUE eyes, I have red hair, green eyes, my hubby and kids are mexican, my 2 brother- in-laws and my my niece and nephews are black and my niece is dating an asian guy!! People think it so weird!!
I love it!! Atleast I know my kids won't grow up ignorant! Another thing that ticks me off is hispanics who don't teach their kids about their culture, language etc..WHY??? I've spoken to my kids in spanish since day #1, if they are 1% Mexican, they are Mexican and should know the language.
Cool your family is a regular Heinz 57 too! My boyfriend is also Asian (Filipino) and his aunt is always asking us when we are going to get married and some have children... she wants to see how *cute* they will be. We have been together for 10 years (I met him when I was 16), but I am still *trying* to finish college.
I am a guilty party who does not speak Spanish (yo intendo, pero no habla)... My father was born in 1926 (and immigrated in 30's), assimilation was key to an immigrant's success. I do understand the Spanish language; however conjugating verbs and etc is a whole other ballgame. My father thought it was imperative that we know about our culture (both history and language). It is very difficult to practice the language by yourself. My relatives on my father's side did not keep in touch after he passed away.
I also do not speak Polish or Austrian. My mother was first generation American born in 1940. My Grandparents came through Ellis Island and were told it was imperative that they learn English. My mother only spoke Polish when she needed to.
I must say though, my Father and Mother were awesome Polka
dancers. They were very cute dancing together (my Dad was about 5'7
and my Mom 5'10 or 5'11). Not only can I Salsa and Merengue, but I
too can Polka.
Spanish is very much a part of who I am, and so is English. After saying this, I cannot even begin to fathom not being able to speak English... I would feel utterly lost.
I agree that people should definitely know about their culture. However, I do not feel any less Puerto Rican, simply because I do not speak Spanish. I am very proud of my heritage and I am well versed in both my culture's history (Puerto Rican and Polish/Austrian). When I meet some "Full-blooded" Puerto Ricans, I tend to know more about "their" history than they do.
Wow, who would have thought that a WLS board can have some deep conversations?
Take care,
Rebecca
I agree Rebecca, I don't feel any less Mexican because I don't know the language. My first born is of Arab descent (Palestinian) and my last three are half P.R.. My husband isn't from the island, he was born in Elgin and he feels that when his kids come to him wanting to learn the language he will teach them. His father beat spanish into him. He feels the same way about religion. He is sooooo anti-religion. Not me. I'm a catholic school survivor.
My parents don't speak spanish either. And neither do theirs. I will hold my tongue on what I feel about people telling me I should know spanish because I just happen to be of Mexican descent. I'm also of Apache descent should I speak that language too?

I would have to go with the racist's also, my poor 17 year old son who loves working hard, and I mean sweaty dirty stinky working his butt off, can not find a job and we think its because they dont want to hire that Moslem/Arab... (he's neither he's Iranian or PERSIAN) but his name is mid eastern and he's 100% all american kid... It really hurts me to see him anquish over this he wants to work so bad and he has better work ethics than most adults I know... He said he would never go to his middle name (Louis) to fool people but he's now considering it just so he can get a job.
My kids have faced this all their lives, they remember the death threats on our answering maching during the Gulf War and the bombing of our friends business... It's sad that anyone has to suffer like this for nothing more than who his father was... who btw is an american citizen ...
