Hi all, I'm in the process of researching the Duodenal Switch versus the RNY and am wondering if any of you have had this surgery? I know my surgeon performs them, but there isn't anyone in his forum who has had one. I'm basically just wondering what the difference is between that and the RNY and if any surgeons out there specialize in them. I'm so confused! Thanks ~Jenn

Jen, I think it has to do with how much you have to lose. The ds involves actually removing your old stomach and leaving a cigar shaped pouch. The advantages are that you can eat pretty much what you want, and still lose. The disadvantages are diarrea, gas and more malapsorption. This is just what I've learned from a friend who had the ds. She started at 505 and has lost a good bit of weight in 18mos. The same dr. (not Frantzides) did her sister who was 430 and gave her the rny. Like I said, I definitely know more about the rny than ds..

Kathy, my angel! Thanks for your reply. I started researching the DS and got all kinds of confused. I just got off the phone with Dr. F's nurse, she is SO awesome! she took the time to answer all my quesions about the DS vs the RNY and I feel alot better now! She also says you are a great person (which I already knew!) She said "oh yeah good ol Kath!" I don't want to over research I just want to know i'm doing the right thing. My appointment is a week from tomorrow, i'm so excited! ~Jenn
