Lap band Surgury
Some insurances cover it and some don't. It all depends on your provider, the contract they have with your employer, medical necessity, etc., etc., etc. The price of self pay also depends on your surgeon and whether you have it done outpatient or inpatient. I did self pay with Dr. Horgan at his ourpatient center (he is also at U of I) ...all inclusive with 1 year follow-up was $15K. Some people have gone to Mexico for under $10K. lapband surgery is tricky with some insurances. some of them still think it's "experimental" but it was FDA approved about 6 years ago. you have to check your policy to see if they'll cover any kind of bariatric care and weight loss surgery. a letter from your pcp stating your comorbidities with ICD codes, what meds you're on for these comorbidities and having him state that "he/she" recommends Lapband/Adjustable Gastric Banding helps too. my doctor wrote all these things down for me and that after discussing all available weight loss surgeries, that for me, he recommended lapband surgery. i also wrote a letter stating what diets i had been on for the last 30 years. what i've lost and gained back. what my problems were such as high blood pressure, arthritis, rising cholesterol and also included my family history whi*****luded heart attack, strokes, diabetes. united healthcare sent me a letter of approval within 3 weeks. my policy had an exclusion about care of obesity/morbid obesity and weight loss surgery not being covered. but in parenthesis it said "unless deemed necessary by your physician." look for those words if you do have the exclusion. it's your key to approval based on medical necessity. i was banded 3/22/04 and down 40#. a bit slower losing than with RNY but i've got all the time in the world and i like losing slower. my surgery was done at condell hospital by dr kadowaki. my brother had his lapband done by dr. horgan at univ of ill. hosp. he's 10½ months out and down 110#. he's had only 1 fill so far. i haven't had a fill yet and don't need one yet. still losing 1-3 pounds a week so i'm happy with that. good luck to you. you may want to go to the Lapband Forum and read some of the posts. lots of good people and information there.
