consultation appointment...what to expect?
At mine they asked me what kind of diets I had tried and needed a diet history, then they took my vitals.
They asked me three things I wanted to do when I lost all my weight (get rid of seatbelt extender, wear regular clothes, be physically able to have a child ... Can do the first two, still waitng my two years before considering pregnancy).
Then I got to talk to the surgeon who explained the procedure and answered any questions I had.
I also got to talk to a person *****cently had the surgery to talk about what it was really like.
My advice would be to bring a list of questions so you do not forget anything, write down every diet and pill you have tried, list comorbidiities, and try to bering someone close to you as a second set of ears and someone to take notes while you are listening.
My consultation with Dr. H was pretty extensive, but my understanding is that since last summer his procedure has changed. And remember I went through the 900 N. Michigan office, so it could be completely different than U of I.
First I filled out a LONG questionnaire about diet history, medical history and a psych questionnaire if you didn't already do it at the seminar (which I had) etc. etc. Then I met with a nutritionist first who explained pre and post op diets answered questions and told me the protocol for getting "fills" when needed. Then I met Dr. H's surgical fellow who did a gas menometry test (tube down the nose and throat...ugh... and a barium swallow (those tests are to make sure the esophagus and stomach can accept the band, etc.) Once those tests were completed, Dr. H reviewed them and all my other paperwork and then met with me where he answered questions and let me know if I was a good candidate or not. Then he laid his ground rules.
From what I understand, he does not do the barium swallow or the gas menometry at the consultation anymore at 900 N. I am not sure why...probably has to do with insurance. The funny thing is my insurance PAID for all those tests and my pre-op tests, but would NOT pay for the surgery or surgical fees...that's BCBS for ya!!!
