Choosing has to be your choice after you research.

To think the sleeve isn't a dramatic life change and not the band is wrong.  In fact in my opinion the band is more life changing because it requires a lot more after care (for fills).  If people are worried about whether or not they will be happy with their decision they have to decide if they think they would be happier morbidly obese.  As far as not ever eating certain foods again...well there are things I choose to eat sparingly but I can eat whatever I want (just less of it).  Bread, pasta, white meat chicken fills me up super fast.  I can eat a few bites and I'm full...so I choose not to eat those things.  I eat lean meat, veggie, fruit, cereal, eggs, cheese, crackers.  I can also eat chips, cookies, ice cream...sometimes I can eat wayyyy too much of those things.  Last night I had a birthday party for my daughter.  I ate 1/2 of a breast of chicken Parmesan, about 5 bites of pasta, and a nice size slice of cake...now does that sound like I am doing with out???    I do drink with my meals but I get hungrier faster.  It flushes the food through your pouch faster.  It doesn't mean no results it mean you have to use your will power not to eat.  I have been successful with my band and lost 150 lbs.  But I made lots of changes to my diet and I exercise 90 minutes a day 6 days a week!!!

Honestly though (my opinion only) I think the sleeve would be a better choice for you.  It doesn't sound like you want to commit to the fills.  I went 9 time the first year!!!  If your not insured the cost is all on you.  The price varies but my doctor charges $250 a fill.  I was insured.

You just have to remember there are some things you will need to sacrifice with any surgery.  If you can't think of life with out certain things...you may want to rethink getting surgery.  You have to be ready to change your life.  But it's worth it.  Any surgery will only be as successful as you are willing to make it (no to say there aren't ever complications).

There are many reasons to have a band removed.  One it low tolerance to the band.  You won't know about this until it happens.  Some people just have problems eating with the band.  There are slips and erosion's that can happen.  These are the top reasons to remove a band.  Just remember a band is removable not reversible.  All surgeries come with a list of complications and what ifs.  So does obesity!!!!  I chose to take a chance and make myself healthier.  It worked.  I am happy and healthy now!!!!

 Hi buddy,
Make sure you read all the diffrent weight WLS. Which will help you decide. I did the RNY surgery
and I am very happy with my weight lose. I am already at my goal weight.
With the lap band you can cheat. There are ppl on the RNY forum whom first had the lap band
and swithed to the RNY. There is a forum also for GSV Sleeve.

Hi Buddy.

I had all 3 procedures. First the RNY, then band and now the DS.

The RNY requires a life long committment to watching everything you eat - there is a honeymoon period when you lose weight no matter what. Eventually the pouch enlarges over time - it stretches and you can eat and consume more food. What is not good about RNY is that once you lose the weight - you have to count calories as you will have the tendency to regain the weight. Not all of it but a goodly amount. The not drinking with eating is another difficult thing to do for the rest of your life. I was able to do it at first but then started drinking with my meals. Also not being able to take NSAIDS  - non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs for pain or chronic conditions like arthritis; I had to take narcotics for pain.

I regained over 100 pounds - due to my noncompliance with watching my calorie intake. This happened after my 2nd year. I was convinced to do the band over bypass. That was the worst mistake and waste of my money. I had trouble with the band from the beginning. FIlls and unfills. Throwing up everytime I went out to a restaurant. Food getting stuck. That made me want to and eat slider foods - all the foods I should avoid. I landed up gaining with the band. Personally speaking, I think they should ban the band. I had scarring on my stomach from the band.

I decided to have a revision to the DS - that it both the sleeve part along with the malabsorption part of the intestine.

I would tell you to do a lot of reading here. Check the band forum, revision forum, DS forum and sleeve forum.

Once your out several years from the RNY, you have to diet just like anyone else. The surgery doesn't help anymore.

I would go for the sleeve, the next best thing to the DS without the malabsorption and potential vitamin deficiencies.

That is my two cents worth. Read, read and read! It's your body and you have to live with your decision.

Best WIshes,
Lucy

Hi. Let me add my 2 cents to your discussion, The first thing you should do is attend an information meeting at the dr. s you have decided on. That will answer a lot of your questions.
I had the band done almost 5 years ago, and like Crystal, I am very happy with it. I donot eat pasta or bread, very little white chicken, unless it is chicken salad, and very little steak or red meat. But I love fish and seafood, and have no problems with it. Anything you eat can cause you troble. It doesn't matter which surgery you choose.

BTW, I haven't had a fill in 1.5 years. I do have problems with some foods coming back up on me, but  I can live with it.

Good luck on your quest, and please stay and join us on our daily roll call. We have all been where you are now.
