My Sister's Surgery

Good morning everyone!

First, I want to thank all of you for your prayers and thoughts of well wishes for my sister! You're the best!

Yesterday was a very long day. They kept changing the time of the surgery. It was so late - at 3:30 pm.

Dr. Guske came out to discuss the case with us. My sister had a mesh inserted over her ventral hernia. What he found was a portion of her intestine poked a hole in the mesh and then got stuck! He said that this never happened before with the mesh he uses. He's never heard of or seen such an occurrence! He said that he would never use that vendor again.

Since my sister is 2 weeks post-op from her original surgery, he was able to use the same mesh that he uses for other cases. I'm not sure but there was some reason why he couldn't use the regular mesh 2 weeks ago - might be something to do with the gastric sleeve - but I don't know for sure!

Wouldn't you know it that this rare occurrence would happen to my sis! I left ABMC at 6:30 and she was still in the recovery room. My Mom and BIL were there to see her when she got back to the room.

Dr. Guske said that she should recover ok. She had an open procedure so there is a larger cut. No drains! So that is good.

He thinks that she will be much better once she gets over the initial recovery period. So her complication had nothing to do with the sleeve. Her stomach is healing nicely.

Thanks again for all the prayers and well-wishes! God was on her side yesterday.

Now, I pray that she gets better day by day. Hopefully she will come home this weekend. And, it's good that Dr. Guske is on call this weekend so she will see him before she goes home.

Hugs and Love,
Lucy

Hey there

I was just asking about your sister on your other post.  Well it sounds like everything went well and she will be feeling better ASAP.  I'm glad to hear she's doing well.

Thanks Crystal.

This morning's update - she does have incisional pain but so far no nausea. Right now she is sleeping!

Hi Lucy,

Thanks for the update.  Sounds good!  Hopefully she will be able to put the bad memory of how horribly she felt behind her and begin to recover and feel so much better. Keep us posted.  We'll keep the prayers going!

 oh Lucy!

As a poster child for things that can go wrong, I really can relate to your sister.  How horrible!  I am glad they were able to get it resolved but sorry it took an additional surgery to do so.

Hopefully, the healing has begun.  Glad to hear the nausea is gone.  That can be horrible in itself!
