Hi everyone. Its been almost 3 weeks since the surgery and I am feeling better. I had a hamburger patty today for the first time, and it didnt bother me. I know I need more protein, since I got sick from the protein shakes after surgery, I havent tried again. I am feeling tired, but I know its not from drinking water.

I just wanted to get some input from everyone on which Protein shakes taste pretty good. I have been drinking a Indian drink called Lassi which is basically Milk, Yogurt, Splenda and ice that is blended. I am getting tired of it. It does have 10 grams of protein in a cup which is good.

So anyone who has found a good protein drink or powder, let me know!!!

The one and only protein drink that we drink on a regular basis is EAS Advant Edge. We purchase ours by the case from Sam's Club and it only comes in chocolate (at Sam's). There are 17g of protein, 0 sugar, 4g carbs and 110 calories for 11 oz.

You can purchase these in the four pack at Osco to try the flavor and see if it is something that is palitable to you. There are other flavors. Strawberry, vanilla and other chocolate flavors.

Have you tried Greek Yogurt yet? Very thick and great. Some of it comes with fruit. Look in your store's shelves. It has a higher protein count than the other traditional yogurts you can buy (Dannon and Yoplait).

PS - watch left over hamburger of any form as it ends up dry and tough and hard to eat and digest. Both my DH and I have probs with it. Also watch that is not overcooked because it is hard to go down and keep down. Make sure that you only have it when you are at home early because it might not be pretty.

I am only going to eat what I can cook at the moment. I know how meat and chicken dry out when they are reheated. Don't want anything getting stuck! I am going to go to Target tomorrow and try out the protein drinks. Is there a particular flavor that is good? A lot of drinks I have tried in the past have a chalky taste to them. What about whey protein. Any suggestions?

I forgot to mention last night that these are ready made and in paper "cans". I prefer any form of the chocolate. I am not sure if you can get them at Target. You can get them at our local Osco which is in Wood Dale. I know you live in the city and that does not help you. I have seen them at our local GNC also. The nice thing about getting them at Osco or GNC is that they come in 4 packs and if you do not care for them you are not out a lot of money. If you purchase them at GNC and you do not like you can take the remainer back for a refund. Watch when you purchase the EAS because there is a variation of the protein drink and it is called Myloplex EAS. This one has almost triple the amount of calories in it. Do not be fooled by anything with a high protein count either because our bodies can only absorb 30gm at any given time.

There also is Muscle Milk Light which is pretty good also. I cannot remember where I bought it at in the past - more than likely at Osco. Also look into Walmart for protein powders as I have read here on OH that they carry a supply also of the protein powders and ready made drinks.

If you have a local The Vitamin Shoppe they carry Muscle Milk Light.

I have not studied up much on the whey vs soy protein info so you are on your own there. There is a lot of info on the internet for that. Any good clerk at GNC and The Vitamin Shoppe should be able to give you info on it. The EAS that we buy is made with whey protein.

Apparently protein drinks' taste are very subjective. It all depends on you, so do a lot of taste-testing. Me, I found that I favor theEAS powdered vanilla whey isolate protein (2 scoops in 1 c double-protein milk = recipe) & the EAS ready-to-drink AdvantEdge CarbControl (watch for calories, carb & sugar grams when deciding on protein drinks).

You can doctor up your drinks with cinnamon powder, SF syrup, frozen fruit prueed, etc. Cleopatra Nik on OH has a website full of ideas, as do a few others.

I use a shaker bottle with a steel ball-whisk in it for mixing protein drinks and if I get a stinky one, I'll drink it out the the shaker because I can close off the opening, keeping my nose clear (kinda like "holding your nose").

You can also drink high-protein soup with DPmilk & babyfood meat added. It's not as bad as it sounds - or looks! Especially with a splash of lemon or lime.

Well, I tried a few different protein drinks today. I gagged on all of them. They have the nastiest taste I have ever tasted in my life. I am able to get more food down now. I am doing fine with meat, chicken, fish, eggs, so hopefully that will be good enough for now. I will just stick to the Lassi. At least it tastes good.

I also started taking Biotin for my hair. My hair is on the thin side to begin with so I cant afford to loose that much. I will keep you guys updated!

I used the Body x Fortress Whey protein powder from Wal-Mart in the beginning and will still use it in a pinch.  Whey protein is MUCH more bio-available than soy.  I have always "doctored " them up with sugar free syrups, yogurt, fruit and diet cocoa.

The way I found my favorites was to order samples from www.vitalady.com.  She has samples of all that she carries.

I am partial to chocolate, so I ordered one of every kind (of chocolate) and started a spreadsheet to keep track of how they tasted and how I felt about each.  In my opinion, the IDS Multi-Pro Whey had the best flavor----just like a creamy chocolate milk.

I then tried some of the other flavors the same way to find others that I like.

I usually order from www.bodybuilding.com as they are the least expensive that I have found and the delivery is very fast.

I have also hear the www.netrition.com is good along with www.vitacost.com.

Good luck!  You WILL find something that you like.  I do at LEAST one per day, but usually 2, so it is important to enjoy them.

Tell someone that you love them!
