Hi everyone. Happy Wednesday! Well, I am feeling so much better. I have been getting all of my water in (almost 60 ounces), which has made a HUGE difference in how I feel. Also, I tried eggs for the first time on Monday. I was worried because alot of people say they get sick from eggs. Not me. I was able to have an egg for breakfast and for lunch with no problems. Trying to get that protein in.

I did have a very strange experience yesterday though. I wanted to have some pasta sauce but with some protein. Since I am half Sicilian, I decided to puree a small piece of Italian sausage and some cooked peppers in with the sauce. It was amazing! until 20 minutes later. I got so sleepy I couldn't stay awake!! I laid down and when I woke up, I had been asleep for 1 hour!!!!! What is that all about. I didn't get sick or anything, just sleepy. I am trying to figure out if this was a form of dumping. If so, any ideas on what I can do for sauce?? There is no way I can never eat it again. It is part of every family get together. And then on my mom's side of the family, its all about Hummus, Shawarma, Kabobs. Hmmmm......this is going to be a tricky one.

Overall, I am feeling better day by day. Going back to work on Tuesday since I am a contractor and I cant afford any more time off. Well, talk to everyone soon. And, if anyone has some ideas on what happened to me with the whole sauce ordeal, feel free to chime in!

So glad to hear you are doing better!

It does sound like a form of dumping that I have heard about. It sounds very similar to my first couple of dumping episodes, the first on fat free/sugar free ice cream.  I was told it was probably from all the OTHER crap they put in there to make up for the fat and sugar.

Either make home made sauce without sugar or just look closely at the labels for a low sugar jarred sauce.  My nut says no more than 5g per serving of sugar.

Fat can also cause this effect in some, so make sure you blot out all fat from your cooked sausage.

The IDEA was wonderful though and sounds yummy!  Add a little cottage or ricotta cheese and YUM!!!!

 Hi Lisa

I agree with Dawn.  It sounds like a form of dumping to me.  That is how I dump.  I get really sleepy and fall asleep.  No other side effects but need to sleep and now!

I get that if I have too much sugar or too many carbs.  Eventually you will find out the trigger foods and what to avoid.  I agree with Dawn.  There was either too much sugar in that sauce or perhaps the sausage this early out was too much.  Not sure, just a guess.

Thats what I thought! And another thing. I went to Starbucks and had a small sugar free caramel latte with skim milk. Guess what, after 2 sips I started feeling weird, as in SLEEPY!!!! Stopped drinking it right away. Its says sugar free, so whats the deal with that???

Just a guess, but maybe too much fat?

Where is the fat from though? It was fat free milk. I wonder what is really in it. I knew after 2 sips something wasn't right.

Even though you order a sugar free drink there is a possibility that the barrista grabbed the wrong bottle and got the full flavored syrup instead of the sugar free.  That is a possibility.  I also became extremely lactose intolerant after surgery and had my shakes wanting to come back up.  I switched to soy milk and then I had not problems.  Experimenting is the key.  And keep an eye on those barrista's.

You might be lactose intolerant. It happens to many RNY patients. Lactose=sugar, therefore the sleepy episode.

I'm a month ahead of you on the recovery road, and can report that the Middle Eastern food has been great along with the Italian food. You're still early-out, so just give it time and perhaps your body will adjust to some of your old (but keep 'em healthy) favorites.

Happy that you are feeling better. As far as the sleepy time you had with the sausage and cooked peppers there might have been a little too much fat in it for your new pouch to handle and you dumped on it. There are as many different types of dumping as there are people that have had RNY. I dump differently each and every time even with foods I have not dumped on in the past. You did it correctly by trying a new food at home and not while you were out and about.

As far as sauces you are just going to have to keep trying with different recipes. I would not rule out ever having it again. Evaluate the ingredients. If you have access to a NUT have s/he review the recipe and see what they think might have caused your dumping situation.

And then again . . . . . . . . .

I really think that it was the sausage and peppers and not the sauce. You really do not need to rule out ever having sauce or sausage/peppers again you just have to try them again at another time when your new pouch is a "juvenile or 'tween". Right now you have a baby pouch and it is very tender and touchy.

Keep coming back to ask questions, we will all try to help in some way shape or form.
