I feel as if I am losing my mind. I felt better for 1 day and now I am feeling really bad again. I am trying my best to drink all of my water, the protein is a challenge and now I cant sleep at night. I feel so depressed and out of it. I went out for a bit yesterday and got dizzy and felt like I was going to pass out. It is so hard to do everything. I have absolutely no support system. My kids expect me to contain doing everything, and my daughter, who is 3 months out from Lap Band surgery tells me I got surgery, what do I expect. My husband doesn't understand anything. I feel like I am doing all of this wrong. I know its not even 2 weeks but I feel like it has been forever. Is it normal to be like this???

What you are going through is normal. Your body is weakened by having major surgery and a lack of protein and other calories. You will still have the anesthsia in your system for close to 4-6 weeks minimum. Having the drugs that they keep you asleep with is partly to blame why you are one day great and the next day horrible. My DH and I experienced not being able to sleep at night also but it does go away after a while.

Try every which way possible to get protein in your system. Review your doctor's program for acceptable forms of nutrition and keep trying to get it in. And as always contact your doctor's office for any questions and help as that is what they are getting paid for.

Lisa, Christine gave you good advice. You are very normal. Get off the sleeping pills, Eat and drink as much as you are able to. No one can get it all in at first, plus your body is still recovering. You aren't the first person who has no support  from family members. Just remember that we are here for you, any questions or feelings, we do understand. Come to us for support. Also, be sure you go to your Dr.s support group.

You just had major surgery!  What you are experiencing is your body protesting and saying "what the heck did you do to me?"  I cant imagine having to take care of a family after the surgery.  I just had myself and that was more than enough.  I dont remember going out much at all.  I took plenty of naps and as I recall, sleeping at night was not always a good sleep.

If your kids are old enough, let them do for themselves.  It will not kill them.  They should be waiting on you.  Concentrate more on getting your water in than your protein.  There is no way you are going to reach your protein goal at this early date.  I dont think I reached my required level of protein until several months out.   One thing that helped me was there are fruit flavored powders that are like crystal lite but they have protein in them.  I would drink these and that way I would get protein and water.  Some of the bariatric sites sell them.  Just keep a glass of some liquid close by and keep sipping all day long.

We are here for you.  Hang in there.  It DOES get better.  Hugs.

Dear Lisa:

I can't really add too much to the great advice you have already gotten, but I wanted to say that I am thinking of you and it WILL get better.

Thanks everyone for your support. I am just so exhausted and overwhelmed these days. I wish I had the option to rest. My kids are 18, 15 and 35(my husband LOL). They will do nothing. We have a dog and some cats and when I came home, I had liter boxes to clean and had to walk the dog. I never knew how much energy that took! Its really hard to take care of them and my family, but believe me, things feel apart fast when I was in the hospital. I do a little here, a little there. I guess its good exercise. I went to the store this morning and bought some unsweetened, caffeine free Ice Tea from Lipton since I hate water. I am going to sip on those all day. Also, I remember when my daughter had the lap band, her nutrionist said a great way to get in some extra protein was to get some fat free, sugar free ice cream( I prefer Edy's) and blend it with a tablespoon of sugar free peanut butter. It tastes really good and has 14 grams of protein per serving. I haven't tried it yet, but I don't think I would dump since there is no sugar. I am just trying to figure out ways to at least have enough energy through the day.

Taking care of YOU is most important right now.  They WILL live.  The worst thing I did after surgery was vacuum.....I was down for two solid days after vacuuming a small bit of a room!

As far as the FF/SF icecream, I don't know, but it it the FIRST thing I ever dumped on and it was HORRIBLE!  I thought I would rather die than go through that!

You can make protein "ice cream" from your protein powder, water and peanut butter---just mix up as usual, add the PB, blend and feeze until slushy, or use lots of ice to make it slushy.

I also have a great list of protein ideas for the pureed and soft stage.  I will post them for you.

Your kids (all three of them) are too old for this crap. I had more help from my 22-month old and 5-year old at this point!

Tell them to get off their asses and help you!

Do NOT do one goddam thing for them until you are feeling better. They should be helping YOU!!!

SHAME ON THEM. Shame on you for letting them off the hook for so long. Get tough!

BTW, while you may not dump, per se, you could have some gastric distress from the fake sugar in the ice cream. Some people have bad reactions to sugar alcohols. Take it easy.

I can relate to scooping poop.     Living alone, that is one thing that was really hard for me to do.  It really pulled on my stomach muscles.  I often sat in a chair to do it.

As far as ice cream goes, I make my own protein ice cream.  Here is how I do mine.

In a blender container, place 3 scoops vanilla protein powder and add soy mil****il it reaches the 3 cup  line.  Add 2-3 TBSP Davincii or Torani syrup.  ( you can find the syrup in WalMart in the coffee aisle).  Blend well.  Add about 8 frozen strawberries or ice cubes and crush fine to get the mix super cold.  Process in your ice cream freezer following manufacturer's  directions.  Divide fresh or frozen chopped fruit between Dixie plastic food storage bowls.  Pour in ice cream when done and freeze.  To serve zap in microwave for 15-30 seconds or 1 minute depending on size of bowl and enjoy!

Some mixtures I make are

Chocolate protein powder + chocolate sugar free herserys syrup and sliced bananas
Frozen strawberries or blueberries +vanilla protein powder and raspberry syrup
vanilla protein powder + fresh peaches + vanilla or kahula syrup.

Oh, honey, I am so sorry to hear about these troubles! --- I didn't encounter them (I think Nagle gave me a Jumbo Pouch), but I urge you to call Laurie or book a one-on-one appt with her to review your food logs and tweak your eating plan.

Consider going for foods with big protein pay-offs: the double-protein milk, babyfood meat, & Greek NF/LF yogurt. The Insopure drinks from GNC (etc.) are like Crystal Light on protein. Expensive, but you're worth it. Do your protein shakes, too.

As for the kids and hubby, I'd guess they'll likely feel ashamed later in life when they do a reality check on how little they're helping. They might want to right that wrong now. --- You really shouldn't be bending and lifting (even vacuuming) at this point. You might be feeling light-headed due to the low amount of food and drink you're taking in. I had to pause to let that feeling pass everytime I changed position (got out of the car, got out of bed, stood up, etc.).

It will get better week, by week, but from what I've experienced so far, there's always something new to learn/deal with this early out.

It'll get better, sister!
