Need a new nut - any ideas?
OK. I believe my current nut, with my WLS surgeon's program, is not going to work out for me. She does not want to follow what I believe are important guidelines issued on WLS post-op vitamins and supplements. Won't even discuss them. I'll try to talk about this with the bariatric doc in that office, but I didn't get a lot of traction pre-op from him about these guidelines.
So, I'm now hunting for a new nut, one who does embrace the guidelines discussed so frequently on the RNY board at OH. I need someone in the Chicago region (downtown-ish or SW side would be ideal, but I'll travel).
Any ideas or recommendations? Please, please, please let me know.
Alternatively, do you have any suggestions on how to go it alone, keep this current nut, but manage my case by myself?
THANKS!

Check to see if there are any local hospitals to you that also do WLS and see if any of their NUT/dieticians are familiar with WLS and can make an apt for you.
For instance in Elk Grove Village the NUT at Alexian Brothers Med Center does the pre op apts. for the Kane Center. I met with one of them on another unrelated WLS issue and my dietician was very knowledgeable regarding WLS. So what I am saying is that there are dieticians out there at WLS hospitals that can see you also.

Dawn, the dietician at my doc's office has all of us on 1100-1200 calorie diets whether you have had band or RNY. Now there are times where if the person is doing some heavy duty training for say a marathon then they go on a person by person basis. Dave and I both try to stay in these limits.

Check out wesite: www.dietbites.com they have alot of info. Did you know that 5 sm pcs of shrimp is about 80 to 90 calories for about 3 ozs so it's what you put with it that adds up to the limits. Always trying to memorize the basic.

I was wondering the same thing too about out supplements and vitamins. There has been no mention of anything except a Flinstone vitamin. When I was at West Suburban, there was major emphasis on vitamins. Also, why do we start on the soft food a week after surgery?? Thats why I ended up in the hospital from eating too soon. I know the dosctors do not have much to due with the nutrion side after surgery, but I am very concerned about the lack of supplementation for the vitamin loss.
Hi all,
I haven't even had my surgery yet, and I've already started looking for nutritionist outside of the NMH program because I'm not Laurie's biggest fan.
I had my psych pre-approval with Dr. Karen Stickler, she's a PsyD that specializes in eating issues, among other things. She recommended these two folks:
Hannah El Amin - Northwestern Memorial Physician Group
(312) 926-9589
Melissa Sujak is at Chicago Lake Shore Medical Associates
(312) 926-6000.
I have not seen either of them, but they might be a good place to start. I told Dr. Stickler (what a great name!) my issues with Laurie - wanting more structure, someone that wouldn't talk to me like I'm an idiot, and someone that could help me through a pregnancy two or three years after surgery. This is who she thought of. Let me know if you have any luck with them!
