Hi everyone,

Up until today I had been going throughtthe process with NewStart, but I think I would like to change to the Weight Loss Insititue at DePaul.  Anyone with any pros/cons?  Any pros/cons for either Dr. Scott or Morales?  I am thinking about Dr. Scott.  Please be honest.  I want to make the right choice.  Thanks so much.

You threw me, because in the Chicago area, there is a DePaul University and they do NOT do bariatrics. Anyway, you asked for opinions, so I will give you mine. Feel free to disregard.

With your BMI (almost exactly the same as my starting BMI--feel free to check out my profile here on OH) you should seriously consider getting the duodenal switch surgery.

Best long-term results (7-10 years out). Best resolution/cure rate for type 2 diabetes. In my opinion, the best quality of post-op life. As long as I get my protein and vites in, I eat what I want, from salads to bacon to french fries to dessert (in fact, I ate all of thsoe today!). I NEVER feel deprived. I am 2.5 years out and so in love with my DS and new life!

If you'd like more information about the DS, please visit the forum here on OH or visit www.dsfacts.com.

Best of luck to you on your decision!

Thanks so much.  You are an inspiration.  I will definitely check out the DS websites.  Thanks again.

UPDATE ************ I have my surgical appointment with Dr. Scott on Monday.  Real excited.  Need to see a dietician.  Anyone know why?

I have no crystal ball, but I'm guessing it's to make sure you know how you're supposed to live after an RNY.

There is a HUGE "no-no" list with the RNY surgery, so they probably want to make sure you know things about dumping, foamies, stuck food, etc. They probably also want to make sure you know the difference between and the recommended amounts of carbs, protein, fats, etc. in your post-RNY diet.

Hopefully, they will tell you about how long you can expect your malabsorption of micro- (vitamin and nutrient) and macro-nutrients (calories) will be, so you know what to expect. Hopefully, they will give you an aggressive vitamin regimen to take (since you will malabsorb some key micro-nutrients FOREVER) since the RNY is a highly malabsorptive surgery. Macro-nutrient malabsorption will NOT last forever (some say 18-24 months at best, so take advantage of your easiest weight loss "window" with the RNY.)

If you are not "ready" for the RNY, they can refuse to give it to you, depending how ethical a practice it is, so be sure to bone up on your stuff.

They will also probably want to ask you about what you're eating now. Some insurance plans require you to visit a dietician/nutritionist for 3-6 months before (and possibly lose some weight) they will approve your surgery. This could be the start of that process. You should probably ask about that so you do not waste any time. If that's the case, make sure they weigh you and take good notes for insurance submission.

Best of luck to you.
