Sorry to hear about the continuing med changes. It can take so long to find the right "****tail."
A week from now, I'll start my midnight fast and then head into surgery the next morning (if the creek don't rise). Amazing.
Attended another party with hors'douves, and tried to eat mainly meat, three small cheese cubes, and raw veggies. Man, is it hard to gauge if what you’re eating will hit your nut goals for the meal in such a cir****tance. I wound up overshooting my calories and carbs. Not by very much, but still.
I’m so glad that there are no uncontrolled eating environments for me for the next week. Back to my home-prepped meals that I can weigh and measure. I have a little portable scale, but couldn’t figure out how to finesse weighing and measuring while standing in a dark backyard. I’ll just have to try harder next time, or, better yet, eat at home and not eat at the party at all.
How do you learn to control your meal’s nut values when you’re out?

When my DH and I were PO together we concentrated mostly on protein. We had a real hard time even getting all that in. We came to learn all the protein grams of all the common foods that we ate and the quantities for each. You will be restricted by your tummy pouch of how much you will even be able to get in so it will be your "sounding board" for you to know when you have had enough. For many patients like myself it was not weighing of food but measuring. I was not to get any more than 1/2 C for any meal or snack. Naturally, to begin with I only got in 1-2 tbls of food at the beginning before I felt like a stuffed oinker. Also keep in mind that your new tummy will need to have the nerve endings heal before you might feel the stretching sensation to even feel full. It is different for everyone. Dave and I felt full almost immediately after we were on pureed foods.
Another tool you can use is to write notes in a food diary for what you are eating and drinking all day long. It does not have to be a fancy dancy notebook as just a spiral pad from the a store's stationary supply area will work. You may also just want one the size that can fit in your purse or book bag when you go out.
You might want to get a small pocket sized book that has grams & calorie counts in it for food. This way you can look it up to make sure that you are getting enough protein and not too many calories in. Do not look at something and say that you think what you have in front of you is X amount. At the beginning measure everything. Do not leave it to chance because you might possibly overeat, be miserable from the sheer volume of food and dump from the food.

Thanks so much for this advice, ChristineB. I hadn't realized that, yes, the pouch will be doing some of the work here. From all everyone says about how hard it is to get protein in, that will be my main food it seems. I'm wondering how one gets fiber (supplements only, like Benefiber?).
When my job gave me an iPod touch, the folks here suggested the app called LoseIt! in which you can log all your foods and it automatically lists the nutrition values. It's been a godsend. I was not able to keep up with the paper log's nut values beyond calories and carbs. But, I believe I'll be logging my food for the rest of my life, and that's OK. Keeps me in touch with reality.
I've got all my measuring tools lined up in the kitchen, and will bring some to work when I return. I might even carry a 1/2 cup in my purse! :)
Again, thanks!

Dave has an issue in the bowel dept and he takes Benefiber that you mix in water. He does it twice a day. When we are out of town like this weekend he has the capsule version in the suitcase to use.
It sounds like the app for the iPod Touch is working for you, keep up the good work.
