I'm Back
Good morning fellow IL friends!
I've been around but mainly on the DS Forum and Back on Track.
I came to a decision this Spring and I am going to have a revision to a DS. I've lost 40+ pounds since February. I joined a fitness center and have been working out 6 days a week. Three with a trainer and 3 on the elliptical. I am up to 45 minutes straight on the elliptical. Something I couldn't do before.
My right knee has been acting up since July last year and I've had 2 rounds of Orthovisc injections. I am a fighter and never give up.
I decided upon the DS for several reasons: 1) I can't take NSAIDS and have been taking narcotics for my knee pain.
2) I have had a lot of problems with the band over my bypass; episodes of vomiting and not able to keep protein down but the not so good foods! I actually gained with the band until recently! I can't wait to get that awful thing out of my body. I don't know how the bandsters do it.
3) I will be able to eat more protein with the DS and more often; something I missed with the RNY. Since having the band, I can't eat a steak. That's over 2 years now.
4) My weight loss even when I am working it, has been slow. Originally I was within 3 pounds of my weigh****chers goal, then the weight started creeping back. Weight loss was so hard, loose a pound, stay the same, and then gain a pound, etc.. My body is so metabolically challenged, this will help me get to goal and stay there.
I've thought a long time about the DS and did my research. I know that this is more of a malabsoptive surgery and I will have to be diligent in eating protein and a lot more and take my vitamins and have labs drawn regularly.
I have to say that I am in excellent health except for the weight and my osteoarthritis. All my labs, EKG and chest xray are normal. I am in great shape for the surgery.
I am going to San Francisco on Sunday and having surgery by Dr. Rabkin on Wednesday at St. Mary's Medical Center. Same as Nicolle's surgeon.
Nicolle is my angel. She is a sweetie. She will let you all know how I am doing.
So, Dr. Rabkin is going to remove the band and port, and undo the RNY. Then do the DS. It will be an open procedure. Dr. Guske agreed to take care of me post-op when I return home.
Dr. Guske accepted my decision and now supports me as well. Thank goodness I have a surgeon here who will take care of me!
I will be here until Sunday. Then I will have my laptop with me in San Francisco.
Please keep me in your prayers!
Hugs,
Lucy

So good to hear from you Lucy!
I appreciate your struggles and wish you nothing but the best. I hope this is the solution for you. I would revise to a DS in a heartbeat, but can not afford it. I have to live with what I have, so I will live vicariously through you.
Sending good thoughts to you, my friend!

Hi Dawn.
It's been a struggle for so long. My insurance denied me but I am appealing. We'll see. I've already forked over $10,000 to the surgeon. My Mom is helping me with the rest and then I will repay her.
Thanks for the good thoughts! I am so happy to get rid of this dam band. It was a mistake for me.

Revision on 04/19/13
Lucy, I didn't realize you were so unhappy with the band, or that you were going for a DS. I would go for the revision to, but I don't think our insurance will cover it. It is great that Dr. Guskie will treat you afterward. He is such a great guy.
Please don't stay away from the Illinois site, we all miss you. Have a great experiance in Ca., and come back your old bubbly self.
Friends forever.

Hi Lisa. I've been keeping a low profile. I've been so ashamed of my regain but at least I got some of it off again.
The band has been a nightmare for me. I applaude you on your success with it. I've had too many sticking episodes with vomiting. It hurts so much more than when I would throw up with the RNY.
I am so happy that Dr. Guske is willing to care for me post-op. He told me that the practice does have some DS patients, so that made me happy.
I can't believe that next Tuesday, I'll be on clear liquids and doing the bowel prep. At least, I only have to do the Magnesium Citrate and not the Colyte!
I should be back to my bubbly self by Christmas! It's going to be a tough ride the first few months.
Hope your daughter is doing well after her RNY yesterday.
Hugs,
Lucy

Hello
Glad your back. I would love to get DS but my insurance won't cover it and I can't afford to pay for the surgery. So I have to make do with what I have until my insurance comapny smartens up or I win the lottery (which I wish for just about every day). The band is a struggle to lose weight. I am back to counting calories and fat and carbs constantly just so I can lose ONE pound....ughhh.
Good luck with your surgery, I will live vicariously through you. Keep in touch and let us know how you are.

Hi Crystal.
I don't know how the band patients do it. I'm happy and in peace with my decision. I only wish I had the DS to begin with. But the RNY was the gold standard and I really didn't research other options at the time.
Three times a charm!
I really can't afford it either but my Mom is loaning me the money.
Just getting the band out is such a relief.
Thanks
Lucy

Hi Chris. It's been a tough road for me. The band just made things worse. It was a waste of my money.
I am so happy to get it out of me. I do believe that the DS will get me to goal and keep me there.
I'll keep in touch with everyone with my new lifestyle.
I've got a great angel to help me along.
Thanks for the offer to listen.

Hi Lucy
It is sooooo good to see you again. I had heard that you were considering a revision to DS. I really admire you for this and I am very interested in how this works for you. I too am struggling with my RNY and am contemplating the thought of revision to DS but don't even know where to begin or even know if it is feasible. I still need to lose 100 lbs and I am getting no where fast.
I admire your persistence and courage.
I have had both knees replaced and it is so wonderful to be without pain now. I was on the narcotics for 6 or more years. I cant believe how wonderful being pain free is!
Please keep in touch. I really want to hear about your experiences.
Best wishes!
