New to this all

Hey all, wanted to say hi to others in IL.

So after a long time, I decided to pursue WLS, specifically RNY Gastric Bypass.

So to others who have gone through it or going through it, can you all point out anything I am doing wrong? Or at least assure me I am correct in any assumptions i am making?

Step 1, called insurance - Says it is covered, @ in-network rates at @UIC and University of Chicago, and out of network anywhere else.  Either way I have a 2k out of pocket maximum. So I am electing to go out of network to have it done at Central Dupage and Dr Vallina.

8/4 Watched and emi program online about WLS and RNYGP
8/6 had my initial consult, with Dr Vallina, the Nutritionist and the Head Bariatric nurse, they laid out the program and gave me a check list of tests and evaluations to have before submitting to insurance.
8/10 Met Dr Tumlin the Psychologist, and had the initial consult with Dr Ali the Gastroenterologist to prepare for the EGD
8/13 Had my gallbladder Ultrasound this morning and a full blood panel done
Now up coming
8/17 Pulmonologist evaluation part 1
8/18 Support group meeting
8/19 Pulmonologist evaluation part duex
9/1 EGD Procedure

So after the EGD i should be good to schedule the surgery correct?

Also every time i call my insurance company UHC they tell me they have no requirements to qualify and it is covered.  I have a bad feeling about a catch here, but I have specifically asked about supervised diet, and weight histories, and they keep repeating the same, "Nope you are covered"

I am trying to speed this along as fast as possible to make sure I have this done ASAP, as we have our first child on the way due in feb and i would like to be recovered and functioning by then to be able to help my wife.

Also anyone had any experiences with Dr Vallina or anyone else with Central Dupage Bariatrics, they all seem really amazing thus far.

Welcome to the board.

Some insurance companies do not have too many requirements and they are few and far between. I would ask for a copy of your insurance handbook to view in writing and see what if anything is required. My sister had UHC for her policy (see is employed in southern IN) and she only had to have a BMI of a certain number and she qualified.

As far as being scheduled for surgery after all the testing is done with your doctor you will need to contact that office and see what the next steps if any are required with them.

 Hello

Welcome to one of the most friendly sights on OH!  From what I am reading, it sounds like you are on a fast track and the right track!  I agree with Christine to ask for your insurance company to send you a WRITTEN copy of your policy's coverage of WLS.  You may also be able to find this on their website.  You will need to follow the EXACT requirements that they have listed as you start pursuing this goal.

Having this information in writing and taking responsibility to insure that you are meeting their requirements will go a long way in making sure that all your approvals go smoothly.

If you are not doing anything tomorrow, come and meet some of your fellow Illinois cohorts.  We are meeting at one members house in Streator Il for a meet and greet.  We have these several times a year.  Your family is welcome.  It is informal and a chance to get to know each other.  It will start about noon.  You can find more details under the topic Meet and Greet on this Illinois board.
