Great News!!!
Hi everyone! I have not posted in a while, but I have good news. I met with Dr. Hungness from Northwestern today and everything is being submitted to the insurance for the Gastric Bypass surgery date!! I am very happy that I was able to get into Northwestern. The staff is great and I love Dr. Hungness. They took all of my tests that I did at the other doctor's office which saved alot of time. He siad I should have a date in a few weeks.
On another note, my daughter, who is 14, had her Lap Band surgery done this past Friday at UIC. She is doing great. She has lost a total of 28 lbs from the pre-op diet until now. I cant say enough good things about UIC. The staff there is amazing! The doctor is wonderful and the nurses were the best I have seen. She is up and about healing great. She is part of the Obesity clinic called New Hope at UIC. She is finally off of her Metformin and teh Endocrinologist will do her Insulin level next week, but he thinks she is on the raod to a medicine free life!

Congrats on your daughter's success. If I was in your place, I probably would have tried a non-malabsorptive surgery for my child, as well. Probably the VSG, but non-malabsorptive for sure, at this stage. I hope it gets her where she wants to go.
Obesity is an insidious disease. I desperately hope that I can spare my sons the pain of obesity and diabetes. It's scary stuff, for sure.
I obviously did not use Northwestern for my DS, (since they do not offer it), but I have delivered both of my kids there, they saved my life when I had PEs years ago, and I just had plastics there. I have the highest respect for their hospital and their fine staff.
Best of luck to you!

I had the kick-butt duodenal switch (DS)!
HW: 344 lbs CW: 150 lbs
Type 2 diabetes and sleep apnea GONE!
Hi Nicole. My daughter is doing very well. She got the Lap Band, which does not cause malabsorbtion issues. She is only 14 and only qualified for the Lap Band through the teen obesity center at UIC. She is already down 32lbs since she started the pre-op diet. Even the dark around her neck from the Hyperinsulimia is gone!! No Metformin for 2 weeks already.
I am the one getting Gastric Bypass, which I am nervous about. I cant get a lap band because I have Lupus and the VSG is not covered by my insurance. At least I have a great team at Northwestern that has been guiding me through the process and will continue after the surgery. I am a big chicken when it comes to any type of surgery!!

Oh no, I understood that SHE was the one with the band and you are having RNY.
Because of her age, I would probably do what you did, as well. At least try that non-malabsorptive route first. If it turns out that the band does not help her in the long run, I hope you will consider the DS for her. That is, if she has Type 2 diabetes, since the DS has the highest CURE rate of type 2 diabetes (98%) and that cure is NOT dependent upon weight loss, like the other available WL surgeries.
Best of luck to you both! You're in good hands with the hospital staff at NW.
Being scared is normal, though. Honor that feeling by doing as much planning and soul-searching as you can to bring yourself peace about your decision. When the big day comes, you will be ready.
