Hi Jules
Welcome to the Illinois Board!
I really do not know anything about Galesburg but I wanted to say Hello and welcome. We are glad to have you around.
Please join us any time that you can for the daily roll call. We have it on the Illinois forum every day and as many people that can hop on and share what is going on in their corner of the world. We are a very friendly and supportive group. We support each other not only in weight loss but in other life issues as well.
Several times a year we have Meet and Greets which are basically pot lucks and a chance to get together and get to know each other better and visit. We have one coming up in Streator IL on August 14th. The entire family is welcome. If you are not doing anything please feel free to come. More information can be found on this board under the post Meet and Greet.
Again, welcome to the Illinois board, and we hope to see you again soon!
Nancy

Jules welcome to the board. We live in Itasca, not too far from where your DH is from. I do not know much about Galesburg other than being there one time with my DH. I remember it as being a quaint town with a ton of history. I do know and I am sure your DH also knows this considering his work background that Galesburg is a historic hub for several RRs. Carl Sandburg was born in Galesburg and from one website I went to it says that there is a population of approx 33,000. this is a good site for looking at info. http://www.galesburg.org/visitors.html This site has a hyperlink for people that are relocating to Galesburg; it is on the right side of the home page.
I work for my local law enforcement (LE) agency and do have a couple of tips for you to find a decent area to look at to live. LE will not be able to recommend any place for you to live but can give you info regarding crime in an area that you might be interested in. You will need to file a freedom of information act (FOIA) request and they have to give you the info that you are requesting. State law says that they have 5 business days to respond to you. So you might not get the info right away when you call or stop into the police dept. Look on the PD's website for a downloadable form to pre fill out and fax or mail to them. Another way to check out an area is to visit a neighborhood on the weekends to see what the makeup of that area is. Don't go when people are at work because it is going to be quiet at that time but go when people are home. As far as schools you should be able to get stats on the ratings of where the district ranks from the state board of education.

Jules,
My daughter goes to Knox College in Galesburg. She's 21, and I'm sure she can suggest some things as far as neighborhoods and schools. She's student teaching at the junior high this fall. She'll be a senior this year, so she's been around there for a while. It IS a big college town. There's a Walmart, Target, Walgreens, a few grocery stores. There are quite a few homes that look like they need a little TLC. If you're interested, I can give you her email address and you can shoot her a note. I'll let her know who you are.

Hey I went to WIU in Macomb, IL and that was 45 min from Galesburg,IL and you had to pass through it to get to school. It's a small town and from what I've heard very friendly. Ummmmmmm...but they are leaving out the fact that the Galesburg correctional facility (Prison) is in that area so when you go looking just make sure you find someplace a distance from there. They also have a mini mall area.
