My friend had gastric bypass and needs a mentor

Hello everyone,

I am mostly a lurker but hope to post more. I have a lap band and am doing poorly, I will post more on that later.

RIght now I am concerned about my friend who had bypass in January and is having difficulty dealing with all the changes.  She looks great and is doing all the right things but she doesn't see the changes. She had complications after surgery but is doing great now.  She feels (in her words) lost about what to do and how to handle all the changes. She feels alone and doesn't have a good support system.  She has questions/concerns about dry skin, hair loss, what to eat.  All the normal questions.

Her surgeon and support group are far from her home.

We live in northeast Illinois near Libertyville/Waukegan.  Does anyone have a suggestion for a good support group, or possibly a mentor for her?

She is doing so great but needs more support.

Thanks so much in advance.

Welcome to the board. Your doctor assisted Dr Rantis for my husband's RNY almost 7 years ago. She could go to your support group at the Kane Center as it is a public group. Who is her doctor? I would highly suggest that she becomes a member of OH and this board. We all would love to reach out to her. Please suggest that to her.

What she is going through is normal with not seeing the changes because her brain has been programmed to "see" herself as she was when she was pre op.

I am in the middle of packing for the Dells at the moment but will have a computer with me over the next 6 days and I will check back during that time.

Welcome!  I hope to see you and your friend back on the board.  This is a really supportive group.  We all hang around on a daily basis and post on the daily roll call with our concerns and events in our lives.  Feel free to jump in any time!

I have a sister that lives in Antioch.  In fact, I had my surgery in Harvard and stayed with her while I was post op.  Maybe we can meet sometime when I am up visiting.

There is a bariatric support group held monthly in Harvard through Mercy Health Systems.  Dr  McClellan also has an office in Vernon Hills and I think another group meets there.  These are open to everyone!
