Restless Legs

Does anyone else have this problem since surgery?  Mine was really bad before surgery and then it went away, but the last few months it's been horrible!  As you can tell from the time I am typing this!!  Only it's not only my legs most nights...it's both legs and both arms too!  It's making me nuts.  I can't fall asleep for hours and then of course I am SO tired the next day, which isn't good when you are in the medical field!!
Any ideas what to do?  I do not want to use any type of drugs for it as they have worse side effects I have read/heard.  I just don't know how much longer I can take this!!

((((HUGS)))) kiddo. Sorry I have not had this at all. Have you tried that drug that they advertise on TV for restless legs? The name escapes me at the moment. I am sure that there is a whole bunch of info on the 'net that you can find.

I haven't used any drugs for it.  When I was diagnosed with it my Dr at the time, said that he doesn't like to persscribe anything because the side effects are worse than just dealing with the restlessness.
However, one interesting thing I did discover while surfing the net in the middle of the night was that it can be caused or made worse by certain vitamin deficiencies....all of which I am fighting right now!!  Iron, B12 and magnesium!  go figure.  Guess I need to relook at my numbers (get new labs for those done) and go from there.

Just as I was about to read what you wrote I started thinking about supplements. The B vitamins help with keeping your body's nerves in tip top shape.

I use gabapentin and cannot sleep without it.  Caffein and root beer are bad for mine.

I was having restless legs really bad since surgery, day and night.  If I sat still for any length of time my legs would start bothering me.  It turns out that I am Vitamin B-12 and Vitamin D deficient.  I got my first B-12 shot last week and starting taking Caltrate 600 + D per my Drs orders and it seems to be helping.  I didn't want to start taking the medicine that is prescribed for Restless Leg Syndrome because I heard that once you start taking it you can't stop or your symptoms come back tenfold.  My Dr confirmed this as her husband takes it and she said even 1 day without it and he is going crazy from the symptoms.
Hope this helps, it's just my experience.  You should ask your dr to do some bloodwork and see how your levels are.  Good Luck!

hmm interesting, I do know that I am deficiant in both of those as well as my iron is very very low.  I guess I really need to start remembering to take my vitamins now!  I am terrible at it.  Maybe I'll set the alarm on my iPod to remind me to take them!
Thanks!!

Monica
