Good morning Illinoisans!

I am almost never the first one  on line anymore since I retired, but today I woke up for some unknown reason. Despite the weather, the birds are having a convention outside my window!

I hope everyone has the kind of Sunday you want to have whether it is being busy or relaxing. Pick something to be grateful for and tell someone you love them!

Hi Sherry:

Here is what www.webmd.com has to say about fiber:

Fiber: Essential Nutrient for Overall Health

Fiber is best known for keeping bowel movements regular and preventing other intestinal woes, including diverticular disease, an intestinal inflammation. Years of research on fiber underscores its importance in overall health, too.

Fiber-rich foods lower the risk of developing chronic conditions, including heart disease, cancer, and type 2 diabetes. Fiber is also filling, and it's found in foods that are relatively low in calories, so it's central to weight control.

Fiber needs are based on calorie requirements. That's why men and women generally differ in their daily fiber needs, and why quotas decline with age:

  • Men 19-50 years: 38 grams; 51 and older: 30 grams
  • Women 19-50 years: 25 grams; 51 and older: 21 grams

It's beneficial, so why don't many people get enough fiber? Experts blame a lack of plant foods, including whole grains.

Here are some easy ways to boost fiber intake:

  • Snack on whole-grain crackers, fruit, or vegetables or popcorn (a whole grain) instead of cookies, candy, and chips.
  • Choose whole-grain breads and cereals, whole-wheat pasta, and other whole grains, such as quinoa, millet, barley, cracked wheat, and wild rice.
  • Look for breads with more than 3 grams fiber per slice; go for cereals with five or more grams of dietary fiber per serving.
  • Start a meal with bean-based soups, such as lentil or black bean. Add canned, rinsed chickpeas to salads, soups, egg, and pasta dishes.
  • Include fruits, vegetables, and whole grains at every meal.

Bonus nutrients: Fresh and lightly processed fruits and vegetables and beans are rich in potassium; beans also supply magnesium.

BUT........remember that this is minimum.  I would shoot for 30, and in some cultures, it is closer to 60.  The average person in THIS country is only getting 10.

Good Morning Connie,

Not doing to much this morning. Just had 2 cheese sticks wrapped with meat for breakfast. Planning on sticking a roast in the crock pot for later. I am finishing my laundry that I stated to put away yesterday.
Decided to watch THE BLIND SIDE instead of laundry yesterday.

Sherry, I don't think we worry about how much fiber we get, as much as how much protein. That is 60 grams. Remember 60 grams of protein and at least 60 ozs. of water.

Have a great , evenn if it is blah outside, day and stay safe.

Huggers,
LISA

Hello everyone

I woke this morning and started to clean.  I cleaned out my linen closet and fixed my screen door (I'm pretty handy when I want to be).  Then I walked over to the gas station for a Sunday newspaper.  Then I came home and ate breakfast and read the newspaper.

I don't know what I will do the rest of the day.  My friend is supposed to come over and we are supposed to take a walk.  But it may rain.  She is doing really well after her surgery.  She seemed to have come to terms with losing her band.  She is very determined to maintain her weight.

Well everyone have a great Sunday.

Hi everyone. Having another lazy day at home. Still waiting on approval from insurance. Going on 2 weeks now and was told that it was resubmitted. Does anyone know if this type of surgery is covered under short term disability from employers? Kinda wondering and cannot find any info on it from my employer.

As far as short tem disablility from your employer I would suggest that you go directly to your insurance company or your pension plan. Every insurance plan is different.  For example I do not have disablility with my insurance but do know that my pension has disability.

hi there,

"typically" if your employer offers you Short Term Disability there may be a waiting period, like one week before it kicks in.  You Dr. would need to complete forms for the disability company to indicate how long he wants you off work.  When I got my band, I was only off, like4 days from work and just used my vacation.  You should check with your employer to start.  Good luck!

For what it's worth, I'm not sure that short-term paid disability leave is applied based on the type of medical-related disability. For example, where I work, preganancy (post-partum)  is covered by short-term disability. I think, if you need to be off work because of a medical condition for a short time, one can qualify. Of course, I could be ALL WRONG. :) Hope your HR gets you an answer soon. ---- Me, I'm just taking vacation days for my intended surgery.
