Why do DSers persist in posting on other message boards? Why the Surgery Wars?

In case you were wondering why we DSers "pay it forward," check out these threads:

http://www.obesityhelp.com/forums/ds/4159143/Did-a-surgery-w ar-open-your-eyes-to-the-DS-If-so-post-to/

http://www.obesityhelp.com/forums/DS/3484967/Who-benefited-f rom-DSers-posting-on-other-forums/action,replies/topic_id,34 84967/page,1/

The second thread was started in 2007, and is still being added to.

By the way, if you look closely at the threads that devolve into Surgery War, you will see that the vast majority of the time, a DSer will post FACTUAL information (supported by peer-reviewed references) demonstating the superiority of the DS for most people, and someone with another surgery will get their knickers in a twist because they take that FACTUAL information to be a personal insult, and we're off and running.  But that doesn't matter to me, because these threads always get information about the DS to the attention of someone who needs to hear it.

If you are pre-op, I hope you will take a look at these threads and then do further research into the DS before you make your surgery choice.

Diana, we do have a DSer on the IL board but she does not get into surgery wars as we all try to get along and exist and support each other.

edited to add that we do have a few DSers on the IL board, pardon my lack of memory.

Christine, I am also a DS'er from Illinois and sometimes I have to knaw my hand off to prevent myself from typing. Sometimes I have to shut the computer off as not to offend anyone. I think Diana is well intentioned and trying to get information out here about the DS. It seems we are innundated with television commercials about Lapband and the Realize band and we all know someone who has had "Gastric Bypass" (RNY) but there is rarely a mention of the DS. I think when people like myself come the these boards they are looking for real information about surgery options and FACTS. I apologize in advance for saying this but when i read the "roll calls" I just crack up. Those conversations remind me more of facebook type postings. They rarely have anything to do with pre or post op Weight Loss Surgery. I will also "pay it forward" as we say to make sure every single person lurking knows what ALL of their options are. I will never start a surgery war. I will never try to steer someone toward one surgery or another but I will ALWAYS make sure everyone knows the truth about the DS and what they may be missing out on pre op.

Dear Ronda:

I am also one of those who wish DS had been an option and take no offense when a DSer informs about their surgery.  I have seen no "surgery wars" on this board.

The "roll call" is where we share our everyday life, not necessarily weight loss related.  If we have specific weight loss questions or statements, those are usually in their own post.   "Roll call" is just a way to keep in touch with each other and what is going on day to day in our lives as we have become like extended family to each other.

Have a lovely day!

Tell someone that you love them!

As Christine said we have a DSer on the board and she quite frequently posts info about her surgery and I do not take insult to this.  In fact I am now educated about this surgery and have even come to realize that it is the surgery I wish I could have had...but my insurance doesn't cover this surgery...but if I ever win the lottery I would consider revising.

when i first joined i have a DS person contact me, and i personally was offended and i may have over-reacted a bit,  however, i think people need to realize that when we chose our surgeries, when do so for our own reasons, now true some may have not researched but some have,

In my case, i did not need anyone telling me that i would be unhappy with my choice,  I can appreciate people trying to help each other, i have not read the link posted by the person you all are talking about but i can say that surgery wars can get so nasty and in the end we all want the same thing ---to be successful at our weight loss, which can happen no matter which method we chose.

our surgeries are a tool and it's hard work, some just need to work harder then others..
but we are all on the same team, the weight loss team
