Hi, We are glad you came in and introduced yourself. I see you are at the Kane Center, lots of us on the board go to them. We can offer you lots of support and lots of advice. Just remember, your Dr. is the best one to give advice, none of us are doctors.

Let us know more about you, are you married, kids, do you work? Where do you live?

Please come in and talk whenever you can, we are here for you, and we will want  you to let us know how everything goes for your surgery? BTW, what are you having done?

well were to start, i am married my second anniversary is 4/19. we have no children and that is one of the big reasons i want to do wls. i want to have children and i know where i am now i will probably never be able to.  so i am choosing to get myself healthy so in a few years i will be able to be able to get pregnant and be healthy for my child. i work as a respiratory therapist , am looking forward to being lighter on my feet so i can not be as sore after a 12 hour shift on my feet. as far as procedure i am going to have RNY for me i think it will work best but my husband is thinking of getting a lap band after i have recovered a bit. looking forward to getting to know all of you.

Hello and welcome,
How exciting for you, only a few more weeks.  I think you'll really like OH for all the information and support you receive.  I'm almost 3 weeks out from RNY and have really found this site very useful.  Best of luck and looking forward to hearing more from you.

Welcome!!  Best of luck to you on your RNY.

As to your hubby, make sure he knows there are FOUR types of available weight loss surgery, with varying lifestyles and results:

-DS (duodenal switch)
-RNY (gastric bypass)
-VSG (vertical sleeve gastrectomy)
-adjustable band

Not all surgeons do all of the surgeries, so they are unlikely to share much accurate information on them, if they share any information at all about surgeries they cannot do.

There are forums here on OH for all of them and he can check them out and see which one best fits his cir****tances. For example, if he has Type 2 diabetes, the DS is the best choice for resolution (98%) and if he has GERD, the RNY may be the better choice. If he needs to take NSAIDs now or in the future, he cannot take them with the RNY. Lots of good info here on OH.

Best of luck to you guys!

Nicolle, thanks for the reminder on other options i think sometimes i forget there are more options out there. for my hubby  he is still on the fence about getting wls at all however he has a host of co morbidity's high bp, high cholesterol, sleep apnea, chronic back pain, the reason why he is thinking band is because of the possibility of reversal is there but who knows what he will choose in the end. but thank you for reminding me

Please do not let him buy into the idea that the band can be easily reversed or that it is the "least invasive" of the WLS. Have him visit the Revisions or Failures board. It's no cakewalk. At best, band removal is still major surgery. At worst, there can be permanent damage to the stomach and esophagus.

Just some additional food for thought. Take care!

Coming from someone that has the band.  It also takes lots of patience.  You have to wait for the right fill and in the mean time you can eat what you want.  So basically you are dieting...and lets face it if we were good at dieting we wouldn't have gotten WLS.   It has taken me a year to get where I am now.  At one point I had too much of a fill and couldn't eat or drink anything.  Then had to have fluid taken out.  The whole thing is frustrating to me.  I know someone that did really well with her band.  So not everyone has as much trouble as I am having.  All I can think about is "if I had RNY or DS I would probably be at my goal by now".  So all though it is one of the easier surgeries to have, it is also one of the hardest as far as getting results.

yeah i have talked to my hubby and he understands that it would still be a major surgery to take it off if he wanted to but he feels like he does not want to not be able to reverse he he chooses to and he also does not want to have to take supplements for the rest of his life, it is his life and i will support him in what ever he chooses, and i think right now i would rather have him do something rather then ignore his health and keep on the track he is on now.
