Got my Blood Test Results
well everything but the B12, they can't find it, so they will call the lab and then call me next week.
Everything looked pretty good except my ferritin level was only a 5.4 and my PTH is elevated at a 106.
I need to take extra iron and also have a recheck of the PTH in a month they said. The ferritin levels must be why I have been SO tired lately too again. What's a good iron supplement to take?? They want me on 60mg for a long time she said..lol
I'm not sure what the PTH means, I mean I know it's the parathyroid hormone, but not sure why it would be elevated..

5.4???????? Are you KIDDING me??????? That is almost non-existent!!!!!
20 is the lowest "low-normal" and optimum is about 100-200!!!!!! I am thinking an infusion is in order!!!!! You may have to fight for this. An infusion can boost the levels immediately so that the supplements can keep it up there.
YES!!!! That is exactly why you are tired! CRAZY!
I was taking Carlson Labs "Chew-Iron" 28 mg each and taking 3 at first until my Ferritin was 191 in October. I took two each morning with 500 mg of vitamin C. I used to be able to get this from www.vitacost.com, but it was out of stock so I am now working on a bottle of Vitalady's Tender Iron. I take 3-4 of them each morning with the 500 mg of C. The point is that most iron supplements are not absorbed by RNY patients. I find the chewable forms work better. Vitalady also has a new iron/vitamin C capsule available that might work for you too.
The other important thing about iron is that it does not "work and play well with others". You could take boatloads and it would not help if you do not separate it......especially from calcium.
You need to take it at least 2 hours apart from everything else including dairy and caffeine. I take mine at 4 am when I get up to potty and feed the cat. Then, back to bed and I take my morning vitamins on the way to work, about 6:30-7:00 am.
The suggestion of a prenatal vitamin could be helpful, but it will NOT solve the issue, especially since you are RNY.
Make sure you get copies of the results so you can check the numbers yourself. The doctors will tell you that "everything is fine" even if you are barely above the low-normal line. In order to FEEL your best, you want to shoot to get all numbers in the mid-normal to high-normal range.
Oh honey!!!!! I hope you get this fixed so that you can feel better very soon!

Thanks Dawn, I really feel like the follow up care at this place sucks. I requested a copy of my results and I have an appointment with my Primary MD on Wednesday of next week and I plan on talking to her about all of this as well. The only thing they told me was to just start taking 60mg of iron a day...not that I need to space things out or anything else. It was like this nurse was in a rush and just wanted to get off the phone.
I am not happy about any of this. Even though it was one yeat ago today that Dr R fixed my obstruction and my life really started over!
