Hi - I'm almost 3 years out from an RNY. ( I love my RNY!
)
The things that come to mind would be:
Which procedure, given your specific situation would the surgeon recommend and why? If they say RNY but you want a band or vice versa, discuss it. Some people are just more comfortable with one or the other.
Be clear on the risks of all options when you mutally make the decision on which procedure will be best for you.
What will be required of you before the surgery? Some programs require a liver reduction diet to make you lose a bit of weight before the surgery in order to shrink your liver. This makes the surgery easier on you and the surgeon performing it.
What is the surgeon's after care program like? What are the requirements? How often will your bloodwork be checked? (The better the aftercare, the better the program!) What kind of support group do they run? What is attendance like?
What are the recommendations for diet, exersise and vitamins? Share your concerns if you feel you will have difficulty meeting these requirements. The aftercare progam should help you meet these goals.
What should you expect while you're in the hosptial?
What should you expect the first 2 weeks post op... month.. 2 months....
With regards to the dieticians, their rules vary greatly program to program. Mine seemed strict compared to other programs, but I preferred it that way because they could support their advice with reasons that were geared to provide me with the best chance at success. This meant no soda/carbonated drinks, high water, high protien intake, VERY SERIOUS on vitamins. It's served me very well and I'm grateful they were strict. (And I was a diet coke fiend before surgery and I haven't had one in 3 years and I don't miss it at all.)
Good luck to both of you! I'm sure you'll come up with the right questions when you're in there.
JLynn
