Can anyone tell me on average how long it takes BCBS PPO of IL to approve or deny you once all the paperwork has been submitted. I am on my second month of my supervised diet and getting overly excited.

Thanks,
Laura

Hi Laura,

I had lap band on Nov 10 with Dr. Joyce.  Assuming you are on the 3 month diet and have all your other appts done or scheduled?  Once everything is submitted, I think it was just about a week.  I got a letter from BCBS IL and you kinda read it and go, "huh?"  It doesn't say anything like, "congratulations, you're approved".  It says something like, you meet the criteria for weight loss surgery. and then a disclaimer about this doesn't mean we'll pay, but we prbly will.  Very confusing, but it is a standard form letter!  Good luck.  It'll go by fast.  If you have any questions I can answer, I'll surely try.

Laura,

My approval was a little over a week.  It took much longer than that for the letter to arrive though, but I didn't wait for it.  After a week I started calling BCBS and asked them to check.  I am a teacher and was trying desperately to get surgery done over the summer so I didn't miss any work.  Once they told me I was approved I had them fax the acceptance to my dr so I could schedule the surgery ASAP. Worked like a charm!

BCBS used to have a 6 month supervised diet policy.  They changed it to 3 months when I was on my 6th month! GRRRRRRRR!

Good luck, Hang in there!

Thanks girls for the info. I am not a patient person, so I will be calling BCBS after a week or two of waiting. Can't wait until it is my turn on the losers bench.

Thanks,
Laura

Hi Laura,

I am having surgery (RNY) with Dr. Joyce on January 4th. It took a week from the paperwork being submitted until I found out I was approved. However, I had to call BCBS and ask them to send me the approval letter via fax. Also like someone else said...I was expecting a, "Congratulations! You're approved!" letter and it was nothing like that. It's a very generic, Your surgery meets our criteria.....I was like....What is this!?!?!? I had to call Dr. Joyce's office and read them the letter over the phone and they told me that was the approval letter.

Good luck!

Erika

Oh my goodness!  I thought the exact same thing about the approval letter. Could they be more generic with their form letter?  I even asked my benefits person if the letter truly meant I was approved.  By the way I just found out, like everyone else I called to check after a few days.  Tomorrow calling the surgeon is on the agenda LOL!
