My first hypoglycemic event
I need some help/guidance here :( I had my first hypoglycemic event today.
I was in the kitchen fixing dinner for my son and all of a sudden I couldnt see, my vision was blocked at the focal point, my whole left arm felt like it wasnt attached.. i could move it but couldnt comprehend what it was doing and I sort of panic'ed. At first I thought it was a migraine because my husband gets migraines and these are the same exact symptoms except I wasnt nausious.
I called the surgeons office.. which was closed but Dr. Kane called me back. I told him that I havent been able to drink a while shake in days and instead of 4-5 i've been drinking 2-3. I had also taken my blood pressure and that was 124/74 so I told him that as well.
His response was he thinks that it is a hypoglycemic event and that I should drink some juice. Well, this answer stinks! even though it may be right, this isnt what I want to hear. I am not diabetic and I drank about 8oz of juice earlier today thinking.. at least they are calories!
I've never had blood sugar problems, why would I start now? I think this may be related to the fact that I am only getting about 500-600 calories a day.
Did any of you have problems with the liquid diet. Problems with being able to finish them? I drink about half and feel so full that I can't finish.

Dear Crystal:
I had no problems with the liquid diet that my surgeon's office used. Each office is different.
On mine, it seemed like I had something in my hand to drink all day long.
As far as not being able to finish a protein shake.......is it because you don't like them? I know that you said they make you full.....try just sipping very slowly to get them in. Maybe just like after surgery when you put them in a medicine cup and drink an ounce at a time????? It may take a lot longer, but you NEED to get more nutrition into you body. Are you taking vitamins?
Those are the first things that come to mind. I hope something helps.

I think I finally found a shake combo that works for me. I had been doing milk or soy milk, 2 scoops of powder and fruit. They were thick and while they didnt taste bad, I had a hard time finishing because I was so full. This morning I used OJ instead of milk, 1 scoop of powder, and the same amount of fruit and I was finished with the shake before I was 2 miles away from the house. It was thinner, tasted more flavorful and didn't make me feel ful til nearly the end.
I think from now on I am going to try to sip on some juice in addition to my water.

AFTER surgery, you will find that it is best to mix your protein with water and maybe ice. Juice will have too much sugar and milk can also be a problem. A few pieces of frozen fruit is usually good for a treat.
I am a protein purist---I usually just use water and or ice. The only thing I add is "DIET" (25 calorie--1/2 a pack) hot cocoa mix and decaf coffee crystals. Usually, that is just to make a bigger shake since I love them so much.
I know, I know.....Dawn is strange........

I too have never had an issue with my blood sugar, but after starting the liquid diet I did. My blood sugar was very very low. Being a lab tech I do have an advantage cause I am able to monitor my sugar more closely than the average person.
When I informed my doctor who will be doing my surgery he put me on the Atkins Advantage Shakes. I now drink one for breakfast, 1 for lunch and then eat dinner. (4-5 oz of protein and then 3/4 cup of a non-startch vegtable) I have have sugar free jello and chicken broth through the day along with my water.
It has really helped. I havent been dizzy or had the blurred vision. The Atkins Advantage shake has really stabilized my blood sugar durring this liquid diet.

Crystal,
Prior to surgery I was told to drink 1 or 2 Impact Shakes per day (I can't remember)....provided by the Kane Center. I did not have an issue with them because they were small enough and didn't taste too bad.
It sounds as though The Kane Center has doing something different than the pre-op process that I had prior to my surgery(Jan 12,2009).
I wish you the best of luck!! I am glad that Dr. Kane got back with you so quickly!!
Good luck and please keep us posted!!

Crystal,
I am hypoglycemic since surgery actually. I have never had blood sugar problems in my life, even at my heaviest weight. If I am not careful and watch my carbs and sugar intake...I will have an episode. My first one was very scary as it was just me and the kids home, but my 13 yr old knew exactly to get me something with a little sugar in it to pull the level up. (My blood sugar was 52!) I have a monitor and am supposed to use it when I get shakey or don't feel right. Doesn't happen very often at all, but I am very careful now
