WHAT A BAD WEEK! ADVICE PLEASE
Well what a week! Ya notice i have been pretty quiet this week... Monday evening i was admitted into the hosp. with severe abdom. pain in the lower left side and some blood coming out of my gastric tube around the skin...
Cat scan revealed fluid under my scar.... had that opened this morning and now have open wound care i have to do... pack it all and unpack... YUCK..
I also come to find that i have a bleeding ulcer in my old stomach... They hooked up my gtube and maroon blood just came leaking out... TMI??? NOT GOOD THOUGH... Hemoglobin #'s dropped to 9; doctor ordered blood transfusion and slowly the numbers improved...
so 6 days in the hospital and i am finally home... does anyone have advice for me in how to deal with this open wound?
First the damn gtube and now wound issues... this revision is REALLY kicking my butt!
Thanks in advance.

Ok, Coach, The week is over, and now you can start healing. I am sorry you are having this trouble and hopefully it is all behine you. I am not a medical person, so I can't advise you. But, I think the trick to open wounds is to keep them clean.
B**** one time my blood count was a 4. 2 units of blood brought it up to a 10. to have it drop to a 5. this was going on for 6 months, finally found a tear in my colon.

After a lengthy illness (pancreatitis in '91 with a 117 day hospital stay) and scar removal ('93) after having the large incision heal from the inside out I had to be opened up slightly due to having a seroma (fluid that collected under the skin). As you have been probably told it is very, very, very common for SMO and MO folks to have wound issues so you are in good company. I have had blood tranfusions also but that was due to the '91 illness and I was in ICU out of it and really cannot remember anything about why I had them.
The wound packing issues are going to be one of those things you are just going to have to do, though a pain in the backside. It might leak on you - and go through your clothing, I know TMI also but it is better that it does that than back under the skin and causing problems again. It will seem like forever that it is taking to heal but I will guarantee to you that it will heal. You will see skin starting to fill in from the sides of the wound and slowly it will heal over. Just keep plugging along or plugging it up (pun intended) and it will be over before you know it. Have really good sanitation while changing the dressings so you do not develope another infection on the surface. Use whatever ointment that might be recommended. It might be icky to use but it has a purpose to help heal.
That is about all that I can think of to tell you. Other than to make sure you get in all the protein that you possibly can to help promote the healing of the skin tissue.

I just wanted to say...I hope that you are feeling better soon. I have no idea what you are going through, but I just wanted to say...I am sorry and hope that you are feeling better soon. As far as packing the wound-do you have an in-home health care person who can help you? I don't think that I would be able to do that. I give you a lot of credit!!
Feel better and please keep us posted!

Hey everyone... well we changed the packing of the wound and all today.. one of my buddy's wives came over and did it as she is an ER nurse... lemme tell ya.. it sucked!
home health nurse is coming tomorrow morning. this is going to be a long and tough road... I am gonna come out ahead though.
now if i can get back on the losing weight road i will be happy.. i gained weight in the hosp. while they pumped me with all those fluids and stuff.

Glad to see you are getting a Home Health Nurse. Ask her anything! He or she will help you. Make sure to wash your hands before removing the dressing then again before applying new one. That's one of the most important things to remember. I've had seromas before too and they do take a while to heal, just be patient.
And agin, just ask your nurse anything you don't understand!
