Blood Sugar And Diabetes 101???
Hey everyone I am currently scheduled for RNY Aug 17. I am also a diabetic! :( My question to all all of you diabetics out there, how has RNY changed your diabetes? I'm a newer diabetic and they are still tweeking my insulin. My sugars tend to run high, like 350+. I have heard that RNY almost cures diabetes? Also does anyone know if its safe to have surgery when your sugar is high? I have heard that your blood is thicker when your sugar is high which can cause blood clots more often then in patients with out high blood sugar? Any comments or answers appreciated! Thanks all :)
P.S. I see my surgeon Aug 13....so I will ask him too :)

I have not been on ANY diabetic meds since my surgery, I was on 6 different meds. My numbers without meds have been around 150-160 at any given time. I am on stage 2 foods atm so I'm sure they'll go up.
RNY does not "cure" diabetes. It has an 85% success rate of getting it under manageable control.
DS is the surgery you are thinking of that almost eliminates diabetes with 99% success rate.
I see my PCP next week to discuss which meds we will decide to go with once I'm eatting normal foods at 4 weeks out.
Don't expect your diabetes to just disappear, it'll just be more manageable with less meds.
Also, most respectable surgeons will NOT perform the surgery unless you are under tight Sugar Control.

I walked into the hospital taking 2 meds for my diabetes before RNY surgery. The day of the surgery was the last time I have taken meds. My diabetes has been resolved. They are debating wheter to say whether it has been cured as it is thought once a diabetic, always a diabetic. But I have not had any high blood sugar or meds since surgery. I am no longer considered to have diabetes or the problems related to it except for those that had developed prior to surgery.
