A re-birth
Revision on 04/19/13
Today is the rebirth of my life. No, not from having Lapband, but indirectly the reason.
Let me explain. 11 years ago, I found out I had a heart murmur, also that the arteries in my heart were closing up. I was told it wasn't that unusual, since 50ish is about the age for things to start showing up. 5 years ago, I was told that all the stats looked worst, and I needed to lose at least 50 lbs, before the Dr would even consider heart surgery. The next thing he said was I don't think you will make it through that intensive of surgery at your weight ( about 305 at that time). I considered WLS at that time, but our insurance would not cover it, needless to say, we couldn't afford it either. Fast forward to Feb of 2007. I went to the seminar at the Kane center. I started all the hoopla for Lapband. Everything was a go, until I had to see a heart Dr. I told DH, before I went, that that would be the stopper and I was right. It was either open heart or no lapband. ( no life either since my heart had gotten so much worst) I already had known it, since I couldn't even walk 50 ft without almost passing out. So, that led me to being admitted to the ABMC on April 26, 2007, for valve replacement and a bypass. 6 days later when they brought me out of a controlled coma, I was told that I was probably within 48 hours of death, plus had they done the lapband procedure first, I would of died on the table.
2 years later, I am still a "heart patient", but I am a winner. I have reclaimed my life, I have found the most amazing group of friends, here on OH,and I can do things I haven't done in years, such as take a walk, and look forward to many more years. Between heart surgery and Lapband, I won't say I feel like a 20 year old, But, I know I feel years younger then my age of 63. I do have bad days, like everyone else, but I know those are in the minority now, and good days out number the bad 10 to 1.
Thank you to Dr. Stout (surgeon), Dr. Sari (heart). and of course, Dr. Guske who agreed to do my lapband.
Hugs to everyone.

Lisa, I remember back when you came on the board for the first time and introduced yourself. I hope that I was an encouragement to you when I told you to hold in there and get healthy with your heart and then you will see your dream of getting the band. It is a God thing that we all have touched paths on this board. We are all God's miracles and He has created the miracles of rebirth with our surgeries.

I never realized your whole story. I am glad you are around to tell it. For me it was a diagnosis of congestive heart failure that was the final impetus to the surgery. Thankfully my cardiologist approved the surgery without balking. I am only in the very early stages. So I can appreciate all that you have been throgh. I am glad that you have had a rebirth and are here to celebrate it and enjoy life!
