OT: grandson and a severe ear infection
Just wanted to ask has anyone else ever heard of the ear drum rupturing due to a severe ear infection?
He has not felt well for a few days with low grade fevers, and a sore throat. He stayed home from school for one day but then the fever was gone and he was playing and said he felt fine.
This morning he got up with a 104 temp mom gave him motrin for children and he seemed to be feeling better but did say his ear hurt and his throat. He was in his room playing with his stuffed animals and then started screaming his ear had blood flowing from it. Mom rushed him to the fast care er, and his ear drum ruptured from the infection. We feel guilty because this happened but they said he should not have any hearing loss from it! Poor baby hes only six. He has had a hard life anyway when he was 14 months old he had a 108 temp and fully arrested was in the hospital for 2 weeks then when he got well enough to come home he was put back in the hospital with RSV. Hes already behind what his class mates can do. It takes him a little longer to process what hes learning.
Just wanted to know if any one has ever heard of this happening because its a first for me.

Yes, unfortunately it does happen.
My closest cousin had seriously chronic ear issues growing up and now has a surgically implanted teflon ear drum.
What you're describing with the ear infection and rupture also happened to him.
His hearing is not 100%, but he still has at least 40% hearing in his bad ear. The other ear has a much higher percentage.

Yes, this does happen... this happened to my son TWICE in each ear when he was 10 months old... he had tubes put in, taken out and put in again... until he was 5... he at one point in his little bitty life only had 40% hearing... he's now 11 and thankfully has outgrown this..... Sorry this is happening... there's nothing worse then a sick child, you'd give anything to have it happen to you and not them!!!

Hi there,
What an ordeal for such a little guy. I'm keeping him in my prayers and hoping he is better quickly with no more pain and no hearing loss.
Hugs, Paulette

Dear Karen:
By now, I am hoping that your grandson is feeling much better. Yes, this can happen and is not unusual. Please do not feel too guilty about it.
My Liv, who is now 12 has had trouble with her ears her whole life and has had 7-8 sets of tubes (we lost count). Long story short, we are taking her to Madison next month to see the best pediatric ENT in our area.
The reason I say not to beat yourself up about it is that both my kids had lots of ear infections and usually, none of the usual symptoms (ear pulling, fever, pain, hearing loss.....****il the infection was really bad. The only symptom David ever had was behavioral-----I once took him into convenient care and when asked why we were there, I told the nurse that he either had an ear infection, or was possesed by the devil!
He had an ear infection!
Again, I hope he is feeling better, and this too should pass.
