Your experience with IL Medicaid

Hello, I'm new here!  I have IL Health Connect and am starting my journey to WLS.  I found a hospital near me that accepts medicaid for bariatric surgeries and signed up for a seminar for next month.

What kinds of things did you have to do to get approved?  Did you have to do the 6 month diet before you could set a surgery date?  How long did it take from start to finish?  Did it cover pre-op and post op?

Thank you!!

Hi Jessi, Congrats on making the decision to get healthy. Also for finding the Illinois Forum. Please join in on our daily roll call, its the main way we all stay in touch with each other. We all really care for one another and will help any way possible.

I have private insurance, but I think it is basicly the same. The first step is going to a seminar. Then the doctor that you have choosen will explain what is needed before you have your surgery. A lot of people I know had to do a 6 month diet, some, including myself, didnot. They want you to see a phych, a heart doctor, a lung guy, and possibily others. I think the fastest I know of is about 6 months.

Here again, it depends on your dr.

Good luck, it is an amazing journey you are enbarking on.

hi
You don't need a 6 month diet unless they changed it. You do have to have a psych evaluation that is not covered and about 150.00 a month and depending where you go example siu comp clinic in Springfield you have to go to classes 1 a month at 20.00 a class one for diet and one for psych so that is 40.00 a month and you do that for a year. unless they have along wait list. Some just have a wait list.
It sucks and most places you have to jump through hoops but it is worth it.
Of course if you have some money or can get financing I would research and find the best surgeon not just one that accepts Medicaid,
My surgeon is the best in the state/ country and he accept Medicaid but you have to pay his fee up front which It has been 2 years for me so you would have to call.
That is just my opinion I almost went siu in Springfield, u of Chicago, and I finally realized I couldn't go with someone who I felt was not the best because this is such a huge surgery.
Good luck with your journey know matter who you go to.
